Classroom Policies/Expectations Ms.

Ettinger
Welcome to class! Many students walk into their classes during the first week of a new school year wondering two major things: 1) what they need to do in order to get a good grade in each class, and 2) how they will get the most out of each of their classes. It is of utmost importance that you follow these policies/expectations so that you can earn a good grade in my class as well as take as much from the course as possible. If you have any questions about these policies during our time together, please do not hesitate to come and talk to me.
1. Attitude/Preparation: Please come to class each day with a positive attitude and the desire to learn. You must come to my classroom each day with all of the supplies that you will need for that hour, and you need to have your homework done the moment that you step into the classroom. Actions: You are expected to act in an appropriate manner. In other words, you are to respect those people around you, those machines around you, those lab benches around you, the course textbooks, those book bags around you, those. (I hope that you get the picture). You are also expected to act in such a way as to not compromise the safety of anyone or anything in the room. Notebook: You are expected to keep a notebook for this class, and this notebook should only contain materials for this class. You need to bring this notebook to class every day this year. Your notebook must be a three-ring binder that has some paper as well as five dividers in it. I will give you specific instructions as to what each section in your notebook should be labeled. There will be unannounced notebook quizzes throughout each quarter, and there will be an announced notebook check at the end of each quarter. Make it your goal to stay extremely organized (if you are able to do this, you will have no problem earning all of the points on those notebook quizzes and checks). Tardy: You are expected to be completely inside of the room when the bell rings or else you will be marked tardy. When the bell rings, you need to take your seat quickly and quietly so that we can start class immediately. Homework/Assignments: You can expect to have some homework each night in this class. It is your responsibility to record the homework assignment in your student planner, and it is also your responsibility to complete this homework and have it ready to turn in when you walk into the classroom on the due date. The purpose of homework is either review, readiness for next section, revisit, or repetition and application.

6. Pre-Arranged Absences: If you know that you are going to be missing my class, you need to make arrangements with me prior to the day that you will be gone. After discussing your specific situation and analyzing what we will be doing in class while you are away, we will determine a due date for the work that you will miss. The reason for your absence and the nature of the academic tasks that you will miss will help us determine an appropriate due date. This due date may be prior to your absence, the day that you return, or it may be a specific date in the future. Leaving the classroom: Please take care of bathroom and drinking fountain stops during the passing periods between classes, before and/or after school, and during your lunch period. 7. Absent from class: If you miss class due to an unforeseen reason, you will have one school day for every day that you missed in order to make up all work that we did while you were gone. For example, if you miss my class on Friday, you will have the opportunity to pick up your missing assignments when you return to school on Monday and turn in your completed work on Tuesday. When you return to class, it is your responsibility to check with me to find out what you missed. You are also expected to pick up any handouts or assignments that you missed as well. When you turn in completed work from the time that you were gone, you must write Absent and the date that you were absent at the top of your paper. If you choose not to write the word Absent and the date that

you were gone, I might count it as late work so be responsible when it comes to following through with the instructions listed above. 8. Late work: I will not accept assignments that are late. It will be counted and recorded as a 0. If turned in by the end of the day for 50% credit. When you turn such an assignment in, you need to write the word Late. Assignments must be turned in when I call for them during the hour, or else they will also be considered late (even if you turn it in at the end of the same class period in which I collected the assignment). Basically, have your homework completed and ready to be turned in when you step into my classroom each day. In-Class Work Time: You are expected to use any in-class work time that I give to you for this specific class. Very simply, in-class work time is not nap time, not time to socialize with others in the classroom, and not time to work on homework from other classes.

Cheating: [The following is directly from page student handbook] Copying, providing answers or any other form of cheating will not be tolerated. Any student who engages in this conduct shall receive a zero on the assignment. There may be additional consequences, e.g. dismissal from National Honor Society or other disciplinary actions. Also it is very hard to find a teacher to write you a letter of recommendation for scholarships when you are known to cheat! The additional consequences are clarified within my personal cheating policy: A student should expect to receive a grade of zero for any class work on which the teacher has substantiated cheating. In addition, the student can expect a detention and his/her parents will be informed of the incident. I have defined cheating as the inappropriate use of other people or resources to earn a grade not deserved. It is the practice of deceptive behavior to obtain an academic advantage or, conversely, to aid someone in that behavior. These behaviors may include (but are not limited to): Using cheat sheets, body parts, clothing for answers Looking across at someone elses work Copying homework Plagiarism Using the Internet inappropriately Communicating answers verbally 11. 12. Cleaning up: Very simply, you are expected to clean up after yourself whenever you are in my classroom. This is especially true when we are in a laboratory setting. Misbehavior: If you choose to be disrespectful and misbehave, this is generally what will take place. First, I will give you some sort of a warning. Be aware because this warning may come in the form of a disagreeing stare or look (the teacher look). If you choose to continue in your disrespectful ways, you will find yourself in the hallway by my classroom so we can have a discussion about appropriate behavior. If, after that you still choose to be disruptive, you will be staying after class to talk to me and I will be calling your parents/guardians. You will also be receiving a detention at this point. If you continue to be disruptive in my class, you will be meeting with me, your parents/guardians, and your assistant principal to discuss the possibilities of your staying in or being removed from my class. Thank you in advance for behaving in such a way so that all people can learn and grow. Food: There is no food allowed in my classroom unless I have given you permission to bring food. Clear (normal-looking) H2O in a small bottle with a lid is the only food allowed in the classroom.

14. Dress Code: You are expected to come to class each day wearing dress code appropriate clothing and footwear. Please carefully review the dress code policy in your student handbook during the first week of each new semester.

15. Electronics: No cell phones , ear buds, or mp3 players. No warnings, go directly to jail, do not collect $200 no exceptions.
