3 4 September, 2013 Green Arrow Not exactly being interested in superheroes, but Green Arrow may change that for anyone. Green Arrow is one very interesting superhero to say. Not really super but is a hero with great intentions. Wanting to protect the innocent and at the same time, show off his great superhero costume and his expensive toys that he has made. Green Arrow is certainly not any average type of superhero that anyone would read about. History Of Comics Comic books have been around for a few centuries. The earliest comic strip was published in 1837 by Rudolphe Topffer. The Adventures of "Obadiah Oldbuck" became the first comic book published in the United States. The comic had several pictures that had text underneath which made it also a graphic novel.(Bellis 2013). Comic books actually originated in the United States in the late 1800s (McCloud 1993). The actual first real American comic strip character to be a popular star was madeby Richard Felton Outcault's called "The Yellow Kid." Yellow Kid also appeared in newspapers like The New York Journal by William Randolph Hearst. It also had its own line of merchandising. Later on the newspapers that carried The Yellow Kid comic was sometimes called "Yellow Papers(Yellow 2013). An influential illustrated book called "The Brownies: Their Book" wasn't really a comic book so has said. The Brownies was created by Palmer Cox. It was originally part

Resuello 2 of a children's magazine called St. Nicholas but it first appeared in the magazine in 1883 in a story called The Brownies' Ride(Coville 2012). Other than St. Nicholas, there were other magazines using picture stories and they were getting popular. Newspapers began to recognize their growing popularity and added a Sunday Comic feature to cash in. (Coville 2012). Still today, newspapers still have Sunday Comics. The Adventures of Obadiah Oldbuck and The Yellow Kid were just the start of comic books. To think that today when you say comic books, you think of superheroes. Superheroes became popular in the late 1930s and early 1940s. During World War II they became stars (Cohen 2013). And now there are multiple movies, books and TV shows that are about superheroes. Spiderman, Batman, Hulk, etc. Many people make superheroes into an accessory item and collect as many items of there favorite superhero now a days. Even though they may have never read their comics but just seen the movies that dont relate to the original comics. History Of Green Arrow Green Arrows name is Oliver Queen. He was a playboy who inherited millions of dollars when his parents died. Oliver Queen never gave much back to society and lived his life how he wanted. Because of that, he has made many rivals and enemies(Giant Bomb, 2013). While at sea, an incident happened where Oliver was lost at sea, waking up on an unknown island. Being there, the only way he could survive is with his Longbow that he

He sooner or later learned that some smugglers where hiding on the island and eventually made it home.(Green 101, 2013). Since he has came home, he vowed to protect the innocent people of the world from the corrupt and powerful. Green Arrow made his costume to look like his childhood hero, Robin Hood. He used his fortune to develop an arsenal of trick arrows that shoot tear gas, smoke, nets, and much more that are considered his toys(Green 101 2013). Green based with like rag clothes, tights, and the hat Robin always would wear. Green Arrow now fights crime in his home town Star City, beating up every villain that harms innocent people. Mort Weisinger & George Papp The Creators of Green Arrow are Mort Weisinger and George Papp. Mort Weisinger is the writer/editor while George Papp is the artist. They created Green Arrow in 1941. Comics were selling well, and the young company now known as DC Comics was increasing its titles and needed new characters to fill them out. Weisingers Green Arrow was clearly an archery version of Batman, no doubt inspired by Robin Hood as well since Green Arrow is inspired by him and bases his ability and costume on Robin. Green Arrow shares many elements of the Batman, including the boy sidekick (Speedy), the rich playboy alter ego, and the themed gadgets and vehicles(Klein 2013). It was said that Mort Weisinger was inspired by a series of movies called The Green Archer, which were adapted from a series of books by Edgar Wallace. Weisinger took his inspiration and created a new hero, borrowing ideas from the Batman series

The early similarities between the two are obvious which was that both had similar modes of transportation, like Green Arrow had the Arrow Car and Batman had the Batmobile, also both had young sidekicks and were billionaire playboys. Green Arrow and Speedy were mainly used as back up features up into the sixties where they became more of a main feature and grew into a fan favorites(Giant Bomb 2013). Not much is known by George Papp. But there has been a mystery where there is a secret artist that took his place at times. Noticing a different G or a W in the title. George did get fired later on and retired( Klein 2013). Summary The comic Green Arrow 101 starts off telling how Oliver Queen became Green Arrow. He was a millionaire, leading a life of decadence filled with late night parties, girls, and continuous amounts of alcohol. Never caring about anything else but himself. Everything changed when an accident occurred on a cruise ship while filming a movie. The ship was sinking and Oliver Queen fell off a yacht and clung to a movie prop to float. Awaking on shore of an island with just the clothes on his back and his prop-a longbow. Using that bow, he hunted and survived the island. Soon he found his way home by discovering smugglers were using the island as a hidden base. Once returning home, he decided that there was more to life than tuxedos and supermodels. The comic begins introducing a woman named Noami, alerting trouble in a night club to Green Arrow. Two villains named Dynamix and Doppelganger have been taking festivities or should say, women to a boat out back. Keeping alert, Green Arrow stands by until Noami gives the go to bash the club.

Resuello 5 Not wanting to call the ambulance just incase things get rough since the police doesn't cooperate with Green Arrow and suspects him as a villain. Jumping into a glass opening through the ceiling of the night club, Green Arrow lands with Dynamix and Doppelganger in awh. Spectators running wild, Green Arrow and the two villains begin to fight with their magical powers and Green Arrow's "toys." With intense moves and Dynamix's electricity, Green Arrow takes a shot at Dynamix's hand. Leaving a cliff hanger of if he hit his wanted villain. Review The story behind Green Arrow is very interesting. Specially how he started off as a millionaire and ended up in a poor situation where he had to defend for himself and not relay on his money. His superhero power is kind of like Batmans. Green Arrow didnt become a superhero because of revenge or anything like that. He became a superhero because he made a vow that he will protect the innocent people of the world from the corrupt and powerful. Also because he actually doesnt have any powers at all. He only uses items that he has made to help him fight crime. In the comic, Green Arrow 101 started off with the story of how he became Green Arrow. Which helped out a lot when the story started with spying on two criminals with help from people that werent introduced. Through out the short comic, Arrow does show the protective side toward citizens that are in the area of danger. Green Arrow doesnt act like the snob he used to be but shows the athletic and power of his abilities like his arrows and the fact he jumped through a glass on top of a roof with injuring himself. Very impressive.
