Case 68: Allocating Merit Raises

In allocating the merit raises I first looked at how much an even across the board raises for all six professors, $17,400 divided by six turns out to $2,900, this gave me a good guide for the median to give in adjustments and to give no more than around twice that amount. Each professor had various reasons for wanting and deserving a raise, I felt that those how at least exceeded in the two main areas of Teaching a service should receive the highest raises, and following that look at years of service. Prof Houseman was the highest raise given at $6000, this was to get him up to speed with the market and to acknowledge his performance in teaching and research; Houseman also has the most years at the university. His raise brings him to $88,000. Prof. Jones receives the second highest raise at $3,400 as a result of his superior work in research and bringing a grant to the college, and encouraging such endeavors. Prof. Ricks is currently the highest paid professor of the group even though he recently took a $200,00 pay cut for stepping down as Dean, his raise is $2,000 to recoup 10% of the pay cut he took. Prof. Matthews is a new hire but his starting salary was most than some fo the more experienced faculty he also receives a $6,000 summer stipend that no other faculty receives so he receives no raise at this time till his performance can be evaluated. Prof. Karas receives a $3,000 raise the third highest raise on account of her superior teaching and the fact that Karas is looking at other universities and may move if adequate compensation is not provided. Prof. Franks is

planning on retirement in a few years and thus is not producing like the other professors, but still he is the most underpaid of the bunch and has the second longest tenure with the university, his raise is $3,000 based on the need for some kind of adjustment and for his years of service this raise will also help allocate more to his position when he dose retire less of an adjustment will have to be made for the new hire that will take his place.
