Garvey Autumn Semester 2012-2013 DESIGN of EXPERIMENTS Section
Lecture 4: Getting Parameters from Input-Output Data.
In most cases, however, it is true that we require a model. We will assume this for most of the remainder of this section.
EXAMPLE: From Guinness World Record Attempt: October 20-21, 2011
Most electrical energy generated by rowing machines in 24 hours. (~10.5 kWh) We probably should have done D.o.E. on this to discover how maximum averaged output power from one rower is affected by: * Load characteristic, k F = k v2 * Room temperature * Length of individual rowing periods * Drivebelt tension * Type of feedback to the athletes.

Summary features of all above examples
* Virtually impossible to conceive of a physics-based model * Each one has several factors (things that can vary) and the total number of possible combinations is very large in each case. * It is relative expensive to conduct a test for any one combination of factors.
* The output (response) in each case is subject to a significant amount of noise.
