Science 8 Block F (Heart Structure and Function)

Structure

Description

Behavior

Contribution to Function RA- collects oxygen poor blood from the sinus venosus LA collects oxygen rich blood from the pulmonary vein RV- pumps oxygen poor blood through the pulmonary artery toward the lungs. LV pumps oxygen rich blood through the aorta toward all the systems TV- prevents backflow from RV back into RA BV prevents back flow from LV back into LA Deliver oxygen and nutrients to tissues Beginning of the cardiopulmonary loop Transports oxygen poor blood from RV to lungs Transports oxygen rich blood from the lungs to the LA Transporting oxygen rich blood to the muscle of the ventricles Transporting oxygen poor blood from the muscle of the ventricles to the SV Separates the ventricles so oxygen poor blood in RV does not mix oxygen rich blood in the LV

Remarks

1. Atria

Sack-like and are located atop the ventricles

Collects blood entering the heart

2. Ventricles

Muscular pumps

Contract involuntarily

3. Valves

Circular flaps TV 3 parts BV 2 parts

Heart is working against itself.

Transports

Ruptured aorta is fatal.

4.Aorta

Thick muscular hose

Transports

5. Sinus Venosus

Funnel

Channeling blood from SVC to IVC Transports

6. Pulmonary artery

Thick muscular hose

7. Pulmonary vein

Hose

Transports

8. Coronary artery

Set of smaller muscular hoses

Branch off from the aorta

Blockage will lead to a heart attack. Coronary loop

9. Coronary vein

Set of hoses

Transport

10. Septum

Muscular wall

Partition
