8 LINEAR INEQUALITES
Objectives:
Use addition property for inequalities to solve an inequality.
Use the multiplication property for inequalities to solve an
inequality.
Use both the addition and multiplication properties to solve
an inequality.
Graph the solution set for inequality.
Translate and solve application problems involving
inequalities.

If a > b and c is a real number, then
a + c > b + c and
a c > b c
*Adding or subtracting the same quantity to both sides of an inequality
will not change
the solution set.
Addition and Subtraction Properties for Inequalities
If a < b and c is a real number, then
a + c < b + c and
a c < b c
*Adding or subtracting the same quantity to both sides of an inequality will
not change
the solution set.

For any three algebraic expressions A, B, and C
The graph of a linear inequality in one variable is the graph on the real number
line of all solutions of the inequality.

Graph
All real numbers less than 2
x < 2
All real numbers greater than -1
x > -1
All real numbers less than or equal to 4
x < 4
All real numbers greater than or equal to -3
x > -3
Example 1: Solve x 4 > 7.
Add 4 to each side of the inequality.
+ 4 + 4
x > 11
Set-builder notation.
{x | x > 11}
Example 2: Solve 3x s 2x + 5.
Subtract 2x from each side.
x s 5
2x 2x
Set-builder notation
{x | x s 5}
3x s 2x + 5

Divide by 4
4 is greater than 0, so the
inequality sign remains the same

Example 5: Solve x + 5 < 9x + 1.
8x + 5 < 1
Subtract 9x from both sides
8x < 4
Subtract 5 from both sides.

Divide both sides by 8 and simplify
Inequality sign changes because
of division by a negative number.

Problem Set 2.8 (pp. 145-147)
71.) The length of a rectangle is 3 times the width. If the
perimeter is to be at least 48 meters, what are the
possible values for the width?
Solution:
Let l = length of the rectangle, l = 3w
w = width of the rectangle
*Given : P 48
P = 2l + 2w
8w = 48
8 8
w 6 meters
Check:
2(18) + 2 (6) 48
P = 6w + 2w = 8w
8w 48
P = 2(3w) + 2w
l 3w 3(6)
l 18 meters
