Meredith Lucius AP research assignment Period 6/7 The artist I researched is Philippe Faraut. He was born in France, in 1963.

He received a degree in woodcarving and French fine furniture from Germain Sommeillier in Annecy, France. He traveled a lot and studied different cultures in countries such as Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Caribbean which influenced his work in portraiture. From his research on the human face, he developed a technique for modeling portraits. He relays this information to sculpting students in his sculpting classes and seminars that he teaches all throughout the US. He has also created sets of sculpting supplies, instructional sculpting videos and two books that teach his process for portrait making in clay. Artists in many fields, including but not limited to: illustration, art education, film and theatre use his 3D masks as a reference for the aging process and expression studies. He and his wife, Charisse, create and sell these materials in their company PCF Studios, Inc. His style is very realistic, specializing in figurative life-size portrait sculptures and monumental stone sculptures. Therefore, it is very sought after. The media of his choice consist of water-based clay and marble.

These two pieces are an example of his work. As can be see, there is much influence of culture and ethnical features from his study in Africa, one of the countries he traveled. I think the capture of ethnic features in his work is very successful. He is able to represent the cultures well with the material he uses. From him, I would like to take away his techniques and craftsmanship as I think it will aid me in sculpting the human figure. I desire perfection and I see that in his work. I hope that studying his work will get me where I want to be.
