Organization & Patterns Life builds from the bottom up. uses a few themes to generate many variations. is diverse but connected through common ancestry. 2.5 weeks Aug. 14-30 Concepts & GPS: Themes of Biology (SB1-SB5) Levels of Organization (SB4a; Ch. 4,5) Structure & Function of Six Kingdoms (SB3b; Sec. 18-3, Ch. 20-33) Viruses (SB3d; Sec. 20-2, 20-3) Evolutionary Basis of Classification (SB3c; Sec. 18-1, 18-2) Variation Life maintains itself by turnover. ...creates with mistakes. encourages variety by recombining information. 2 weeks Sep. 3-17 Concepts & GPS: Cell Reproduction (SB1a; Ch. 10, Sec. 11-2) Mendelian Genetics (SB2c; Ch. 11, 12) Intro. to Mutations (SB2d; Sec. 14-1) Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction (SB2e; Sec. 11-1) Equilibrium Life needs and inside and an outside. occurs in water. works in cycles. recycles everything it uses. 2.5 weeks Sep. 18-Oct. 4 Concepts & GPS: Cell Structure & Function (SB1a; Ch. 7) Cellular Transport (SB1d; Ch. 8) Nutrient Cycling (SB4b; Sec. 4-3) Successional Changes (SB4c; Sec. 4-1) Human Environmental Impacts (SB4d; Ch. 6) MIDTERM EXAM Information Life assembles itself into chains. organizes with information. ...creates with mistakes. 3 weeks Oct. 7-Nov. 1 Concepts & GPS: Macromolecules (SB1c; Sec. 3-3) DNA, RNA, & Protein Synthesis (SB2a, SB2b; Ch. 13) Mutations (SB2d; Sec. 14-1) DNA Technology (SB2f; Ch. 15) Evidence of Evolution (SB5c; Sec. 16-2) History of Life (SB5b; Ch. 19, Sec. 16-3) Interdependence Life ...competes within a cooperative framework. ...is interconnected and interdependent. ...is opportunistic. tends to optimize rather than maximize. 3 weeks Nov. 4-15 Concepts & GPS: Ecological Relationships (SB4a; Ch. 5) Plant Adaptations (SB4e; Ch. 23-25) Animal Adaptations (SB4f; Ch. 26, 33, 27-32) History of Evolutionary Theory (SB5a; Ch. 16) Natural Selection (SB5d; Sec. 16-2, Ch. 17) Biological Resistance (SB5e; p. 484) Energy Life requires energy to maintain its structure and function. runs on sugar. End-of-Course Test & Culminating Performance Assessment

2 weeks Nov. 18-Dec. 6 Concepts & GPS: Enzymes (SB1b; Sec. 3-1, 3-4) Photosynthesis & Cellular Respiration (SB3a, Ch. 9) Energy Flow (SB4b; Sec. 4-2) o Food Chains & Webs o Energy Pyramids POST TEST

2 weeks Dec. 9-20 Students demonstrate an integrated understanding of biological concepts and scientific inquiry through projects, investigations, or other performance assessments.

All units integrate laboratory investigations and other hands-on experiences that incorporate the process of scientific inquiry and develop students understandings of the characteristics and nature of science. Units should be addressed in a manner that integrates themesincluding evolution; scientific inquiry; and science, technology, and societythroughout the course. Text references for Holt Biology are provided for convenience. Additional resources will be required to fully address all standards.
