The spreadsheet below shows how to calculate the running cost of electric motors both direct and on line with an inverter. Definitions Motor running costs Motor power KW Run hours Cost of electricity Energy saving factor Total cost of electricity to run the motor for 1 year Power rating of motor Number of hours for 1 year, assumed to be 1x365x24=8760hrs. Assumed to be 7p/unit, one unit 1kWhr. Because fans and pumps operate on a cube law principle the energy saved reduces by the cube of the speed reduction therefore a motor running at 50% speed will use 0.5x0.5x0.5 of the power ie: 0.125 or only comsume 12.5% of the normal power. Savings are the difference between the normal running costs with an inverter installed. The number of months taken to pay for the cost of an inverter for this exercise no allowance has been made for installation ie: cabling, labour etc.
