Course Syllabus: GLE4O Advanced Learning Strategies

Teacher: Ms. Johnston Classroom: Room 43 Office location: Guidance & Learning (Guidance end of the Learning Commons)

Welcome to GLE40, Advanced Learning Strategies, or Learning Strats! Some of you are new to this course, while others have taken a similar course in previous years. In either case, my hope is that you will learn and grow over the course of the year, reaching the goals that you have set for yourself, while coming away better prepared for the transition for what comes after LCS. This course is informed by four key Essential Questions (EQ), which will provide focus, rationale and meaning behind everything that we do. They are: What areas of my learning profile am I interested in exploring further and how might I go about this? How will this understanding allow me to grow as a learner? How do I advocate and be responsible for managing my academic and social life? How will I manage the changes I foresee having to make in the way I live my life, as I transition to post-secondary? How will I define success at post-secondary and what path do I need to follow? GLE4O is going to be made up of modules some that we will all work through together, while others that are open to choice and selection by individuals. Each person will have completed the same number of modules by the end of the course, though the combination will look somewhat different for each one of you.
Some of the Modules include: Organization & Materials Management Understanding your Learning Profile Creation of an electronic portfolio Use of Technology o Read & Write o Windows 7 Speech Recognition o Live Scribe pens o Mindjet mapping software o Padlet & Weebly Learning Strategies o Note-taking o Essay Writing o Reading o Test Preparation o Time Management Action Research o Mindfulness, individual LDs, Character develop, stress management

Assignments, Assessments & Individual Meetings 12 modules in total: Six modules which we will work through together; three others chosen by you (one in each term), for a total of nine modules. Each module will have an assignment associated with it and will comprise your term work (70%) of your grade. You will be encouraged to develop and strengthen the 6 Learning Skills associated with every course at LCS, and provided with feedback on these: Responsibility, Independent Work, Organization, Collaboration, Initiative & Self-Regulation. There is no exam, but instead a summative assessment, which will be the electronic portfolio you build throughout the year, and worth 30% of your mark. There will be individual meetings once per month, to provide feedback and support.
