TOP TIPS
When taking a bearing near a vehicle, you must be a

least 20m away A figure of 16 represents 1600 mils The compass is graduated in 20 mil divisions with every hundred mils marked and every two hundred mils marked and numbered The figures read from right to left. Therefore the figures increase to the left in twenties eg: 1620, 1640, 1660, 1680 and 1700 Keep the compass horizontal. If it is held 140 mils out of the horizontal it will stick and not give a correct reading

Select the bearing on which you want to march Open the lid and fold it flat Undo the knurled knob and move the bearing round to the top Tighten the knurled knob Line up the two illuminated sticks Point the compass Walk forward ensuring that the two illuminated sticks do not separate
