Baum Central English 406 Renewable Energy Earth, the only life sustaining planet in this universe. The only planet we know of and live on. This way of life is being threatened by our consumption. As of August 2013 carbon emissions are up to 395.15 parts per million. Compared to the Upper Safe Limit of 350 ppm carbon emissions caused by human activities is accelerating quickly. The world is heating up and not slowing down. This could be the cause of a heat wave in the beginning of December. Global warming is imminent and slowly affecting our way of life. We can change this in our daily lives by becoming more energy efficient. The things we need to change follow as the our own lack of energy, lack of investment causing these new ideas to go uninvested, a great convenience of energy resources, and the cost of Coal and fossil fuel emissions. I. Humans have become reliant on electricity to do work in our everyday lives. A. We use computers, android phones, cars, and lighting our homes. 1. Almost everything we do on a normal basis we require energy 2. Even as we sit there is an abundance of energy being used now. B. Today we use as much energy as we create and waste just as much in frivolous things 1. Such things can be noticed in your monthly electric bill 2. You can notice it when your phone dies after you use it all day in school C. The amount of energy we create is just as easily used by the people.

1. As of 2011 11% of US energy generation is used residentially and commercially 2. Comparatively 40% goes to creating electricity itself a. Of which well over half is lost in creating it b. From that from transportation, counting, and usage 14% is ultimately created to be used D. Without the energy that we create we cannot do most the things we do on a normal basis II. Using Energy is not the only problem we face. There isnt enough funding for the new energy technologies. A. Many new companies are rising to the challenge of finding better energy resources. 1. Such as ExxonMobil, E.ON, and Westinghouse B. Just as many companies are going bankrupt from under-funding from the public and government C. Governments around the world are adjusting investment policies toward energy research. 1. The U.S. itself has altered policies and confused its investors 2. Let alone some countries dont have the money to spend on their energy policies D. With the lack of investment into Renewable energy research not much is getting done.

1. New technology in the energy market is costly to make 2. The idea now is to make it cheaper and more affordable as well as efficient. III. Efficiency is the one thing we lack in energy creation today A. Today in creating electricity itself we waste well over half the materials to generate electricity. 1. Furthermore only 37% is truly generated followed by consumptions in transport, creation, and plant uses. 2. Of that 37% only 32% goes to the public usage in residential, transportation and industrial. B. Renewable energy technologies such as solar, wind, and geothermal only account for 9% of general energy generation. 1. This includes solar, wind, geothermal, biomass, and other options of generation 2. Nuclear power itself accounts for as much as the renewable energy at 10% by itself. C. The dominant fuel source today accounting for 40% of energy generation is Coal. 1. Second in the world followed by oil except in the power sector 2. Coal accounts for 30% in general usage D. Coal and fossil fuels are causing a great increase of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere. 1. Today our atmosphere holds 392.92 ppm of carbon dioxide.

2. Greater buildups of carbon dioxide causes our planet to heat up, even it such an unnoticeable way to our own bodies. E. Coal and fossil fuels are the single most abundant but limited forms of fuel we have. 1. Renewable energy technologies are costly and expensive 2. Renewable energy itself is apeiron, solar generation lasts as long as the sun, wind lasts as long as the earth and hydropower will run as long as there is water F. Only by convenience do we use coal and fossil fuels so heavily and ignore that it is causing the heating of our planet. IV. O: Why do we not change our choices of fuels is truly because of convenience. A. Coal and fossil fuels are more abundant in the sense that they can be converted into the energy we need more so than trying to create it from renewable sources. B. Renewable energy is as stated expensive and in some cases inconvenient by sector. 1. Solar power is abundant in regions of texas and nevada while Wind power is abundant in the valleys of Colorado and Hydropower to Niagara. 2. Newer forms of energy generation is regionalized by their fuel and in some cases do not work in the favour of demand

C. China is the world's biggest carbon emitter. The country relies on fossil fuels to generate its energy. 1. The price of coal per ton can cost more that the value of the electricity it produces 2. China in no doubt can see coal-fired power plants as the only way to maintain energy stability after recent energy shortages D. Coal will remain the dominant fuel in China and many emerging countries in need of energy generation for a long time. V. Coal and other fossil fuels account for the rising global temperature and CO2 buildup A. Fossil fuels are the most abundant fuel sources. B. Since the discovery of coal to heat the homes and fuel fires of the wealthy and then the black gold of oil is founded in the americas CO2 has sparked a rise. C. Fossil fuels account for more than 70% of energy generation in the US followed by 18% combined nuclear and renewable forms of energy. D. These emissions cause great changes to the CO2 atmospheric build. 1. Carbon Dioxide itself is going to always be around and will be changed back by the trees, plants and new technologies we create. 2. We can only attempt to bring these numbers down to ensure a greater future to our race and generations to follow. E. Earth is the only home that exists for all of us that we know of.

1. As many of you may have read into the ideas of Mars being the next human home 2. This is an idea far into the future but now carbon emissions are something needed to be kept in check now F. Coal is an abundant resource and a nonrenewable one as well 1. Coal is easily refined and transported compared to most 2. Renewable is regional and inconvenient and in small amounts cant match up to the easiness of coal and other fossil fuels. VI. Carbon emissions are changing our world and not for the better that we need A. Global warming is a direct cause of our usage of fossil fuels and emissions of CO2 1. CO2 in the atmosphere and acts as an insulant in a way. 2. Solar rays hit the earth each moment of the day and these rays get captured in the earth's atmosphere causing it to heat up gradually B. By this gradual heating many changes are happening to our environments both here and in the north. 1. The polar ice caps are retreating north and melting into the oceans 2. This is causing many ecosystems to disappear or adapt to their new system C. We can fix this by depleting our carbon usage.

1. We need to fix the problems with renewable energy sources such as investment. 2. These are sources of ZERO Carbon emission and of no harm to our atmosphere. By removing many sources of carbon emission in our atmosphere we can expand the lifetime of the human race on this planet and this planets life. Some say that a Nuclear war will be the end of our world but unless we change our ways of creating energy there wont be anyone to use them. Bill Gates, an innovator and creator of Microsoft, gave a talk on TED, an international talk show where inventors and idealists share their ideas with the world. Innovating to Zero was the name of his speech and he spoke of the same thing i did today. CO2 is becoming a dangerous thing and the biggest change we can make is our energy usage and eventually future investment in these better technologies that can make our lives better.

1.Coal and fossil fuel emissions 2. Human energy crisis 3. Lack of Investing 4. Convenience of Energy 5. Solution: Alternative Energy [2 3 4 0 1] - Solution
