LESSON PLANNING TEMPLATE

Name: Yulia Sorokina Grade level: Pre-K Observation: 1 2 3 4

Long-term specific goal(s) for LESSON: 1. Title of Research Lesson: What are we Having for Lunch Today? 2. Short-term specific goal(s) for lesson: Have children identify on their plates the fruits, vegetables, and the pinwheels. Have children be able to count how many of their peers have fruits, vegetables, and pinwheels. Make comparisons of the data by reading the graph made in class. 3. Standards addressed: 6.B.Ecd: Informally solve simple mathematical problems presented in a meaningful context. 6.D.ECb: Describe comparisons with appropriate vocabulary, such as more, less, greater than, fewer, equal to, or same as. 4. Background of the Lesson: Children have experience with food at home, previous lunches. Children have background knowledge of what a vegetable, fruit, and main entre (pinwheel) is.

5. Lesson Procedure Time Activities (Divide this into sections. Sections might include: Set-up, Introduction, Teacher-guided instruction, Individual Practice, Group Work, Sharing Ideas, Summary, etc.) Introduction Dialogue (Teachers Questions; Anticipated Student Responses) Explain that today we will be investigators. Does anyone know what it means to investigate? Possible responses: To find, look, search, be a detective. Explain that to investigate is to look closely. Explain that we will first serve the food, then we will look closely at our plates and count how many of our friends wanted fruit, vegetable, or the pinwheel. Anticipated: Children might want to eat early, explain that this is a special lunch time, and that if we pay attention it will help us in making a chart tomorrow. Give out post it notes Ask each student to put up their post-it note on the graph depending on what they had for lunch the day before (give a post it note for each of the meal options, color code) After the students take turns putting the post-it notes, ask for students to

page _________ Environment (Materials, Strategies, Adaptations) Have the lunch cart by the table, make sure that the table is set with plates and napkins. Pour out the milk beforehand. Start serving the food as soon as introduction is finished. Comments

Next day at group create a chart to graph the results from the previous investigation

Have chart prepared with post-it notes to give out to students

summarize How many of my friends had______ for each of the food options available at lunch. Have students look at the graph and count the post-it notes. Anticipated responses: students might need assistance counting, might need help from friends to summarize the results.

6. Evaluation: (How will you know whether or not you have achieved your short-term specific goals?) I will know that the children have accomplished the goals if they are able to identify who had what for lunch, and can compare what was consumed the most out of the options by looking at the chart made in group time. The children will use post it notes to signify each item from the menu, and then they will describe what they liked as a class the most from the choices on that given day.

7. Post Lesson Reflection: Talk about the goals of your lesson, how did your lesson meet those goals? What did the childrens responses to this lesson tell you about whether your goals were met? My goals set for the lesson were met because the children were able to on the second part of the lesson identify the food groups that were on their plates, and also were able to read the data from the graph that we made. They had an understanding of the different foods, and were able to use comparison words to state which food was eaten more or less.

What would you change about I would improve this lesson by stating my expectations more clearly at the beginning of lunch, since Adrianna this lesson and why would regardless of my instruction to wait to eat started her food. I think that next time I will give an introduction to the those changes improve it? lesson before the food is served, since the children will be hungry I do not want to take away from their eating time.

How did your organization and materials affect the success of the lesson?

My organization of having the graph drawn out beforehand and post-it notes available helped the lesson flow. However, I would like to use graph paper and not a wipe out board for the reteach so that I can have the graph as a resource/evidence. Or if I use the wipe out board I will take a picture of it to save.

What were some challenges with this lesson? What surprised you?

I was surprised that my students were very eager to continue the lesson, and I was asked the next day if we can investigate again since they enjoyed investigating during lunch and making the graph.
