Lesson Planning Sheet Title: Converting between Metric Units Learning Objectives: By the end of the lesson: All

l students should be able to use the place value table to convert between mm and cm. Most students should be able to convert between milli, cent and Kilo. Some students should be able to know by mental recall the conversions for all metric units. Key words: Metric, Dimension, Length, Weight, Capacity, Metre, Gram, Litre, Milli, Kilo, Cent Learning Activities Starter/Introduction Students distinguish between metric units of length, capacity and weight. To extend this task have the students place the measurements in order of magnitude. Students could present their groupings on mini-whiteboards for teacher assessment. Development It is important that students understand the numerical meaning of milli, cent and Kilo. This could be consolidated through the use of the place value table in multiplying and dividing by different powers of ten. Link converting the measurements to equivalent ratios as this provides a clear written method so it is intuitive to go from cm to m and back again. Students could work through the questions on the second slide with the teacher using their miniwhiteboards and attempt the problems on the second slide independently. Plenary Choice of plenaries. One to extend, one to consolidate. If the class have found the concept difficult they could apply their learning to sort in order of magnitude the different measurements by choosing a common unit. Encourage students to determine their own common unit rather than providing one for them. To extend the learning of the lesson students could look at converting between metric units of area and volume. Students should use diagrams to convert the lengths then calculate the equivalent areas and volumes. Differentiation More able: Students could attempt converting metric units of area and volume as this will deepen their ability to convert between single dimensions. Researching very small measurements such as Pico and Nano and converting them to Kilo and Mega will extend the students ability to apply multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. Less Able Students could stick to converting only lengths rather than weights and capacities. The use of a place value table should be encouraged. Resources: Place Value Table Mini-Whiteboards
