At a joint, a CLOCKWISE moment acting on the end of a member is POSITIVE. A hinge at a joint has a POSITIVE rotation when it corresponds to the extension of those outer fibres which are on the clockwise side of the member. For bending moments and hinge rotations within the length of a horizontal or sloping member, a SAGGING moment and the corresponding hinge rotations are POSITIVE. Within the length of a vertical member, the bending moments or hinge rotations which produce tension or extension on the right-hand side of the member is POSITIVE.
All the joints are fixed against rotation (but not against horizontal movement). The sum of clockwise moments at both ends of columns at a particular storey must be equal to the storey shear multiplied by the storey height. Wind shear is divided equally between the columns in any one storey.
