FYI:

Image sizing and resizing for Web.

http://www.igcseict.info/forums/viewtopic.php?id=177
There are many different types of image file (just as there are different types of wordprocessing file, or database file - it all depends on the software that is used to create and work with the file) The three most common types of image file are: JPEG GIF PNG (But you will know of others, e.g. PSD for Photoshop images, etc.) The 'colour depth' of an image relates to how many different colours each pixel can be. For an image with an 8 bit colour depth, each pixel can be any of 256 different colours (this is the standard setting for a GIF images) For an image with an 24 bit colour depth, each pixel can be any of 16.8 million different colours (this is the standard setting for a JPEG images) You can see that JPEGs are much better than GIFs for photos since they can display much a more accurate range colours (photos stored as GIFs tend to look a bit cartoon-like with distinct blocks of colour, rather than smooth shades) So, for the exam question... You need to open the image in an image editor - even MS Paint will do the job. Do all of the cropping and resizing that is needed, then do a Save As... Select GIF as the file type and save a new copy of the image. By choosing GIF you are also automatically setting the image to a colour depth of 8 bits. Hope that all makes sense!
