MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar?

HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentrations through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. The reason the water will flow into the egg is because outside of the egg, there is very high concentration of 95% water, so this causes the water molecules to flow through the selectively permeable membrane and inside of the egg to lower concentration of 74% water, making the egg bigger. Not only does this process make the egg bigger, but it also causes the egg shell to dissolve due to the chemical reaction this experiment causes. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS:
DAYS 1 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.8 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 OBSERVATIONS *Displaced 50ml *Bubbles collection on shell in certain spots *Bubbles are rising (chemical reaction) *Displaced 38ml *Very heavy and slimy *Little bits of shells still attached *Water level 190 without egg *Displaced 68ml *Egg was still very slimy and no egg shells were left

CONCLUSION In this lab, we studied the process of osmosis using an egg and vinegar. To test this, we left an egg in vinegar for 4 days. During that time period, the water molecules, an area of high concentration, flowed through the selectively permeable membrane into the egg, an area of low concentration. After 4 days, our egg expanded 2.5 centimeters, .5 centimeters less than the class average which was 3.0,

and only .2 centimeters less than the whole 7th grade average which was 2.7. My hypothesis stated that the vinegar would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS When the egg was placed in the vinegar, the eggshell dissolved. This is because a chemical reaction occurred due to the fact that the eggshell, calcium carbonate, was placed in vinegar, a weak acid. This causes the water molecules in vinegar to flow through the selectively permeable membrane into the egg. Period 7 Group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 cm after 4 days, compared to Group 7, which expanded 1.1 cm. Compare the results of these two groups. What was the difference in expansion? What was the rate (distance/time) of expansion in 4 days? Explain the discrepancy in data. Why did these groups get different results? Period 7 group 3s egg expanded by 4.5 centimeters after 4 days compared to group 7 which expanded 1.1 centimeters. Group 3s egg expanded 3.4 centimeters more than group 7. The rate in which group 3s egg expanded was about 1.125 centimeters per day compared to group 7s egg, which had an expanding rate of about 0.275 centimeters per day. I believe these groups got different data because there might have been a slight calculation error from group 7. I can prove this because group 7s expanding rate was very different from all the other groups.

Water is important in a cell because like a human, cells need water to function. These functions are carrying out basic jobs in a cell, maintaining the cells temperature and shape, diluting chemicals, and carrying materials in and out of the cell.
