MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB) PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to grow/expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I think that the water will go into the egg. There is 95% of water in the vinegar, and 5% of acetic acid in the vinegar. Since the vinegar has acetic acid in it, it will make the shell of the egg disintegrate, so then the membrane of the egg will be exposed to the vinegar and water, and that will fill the egg with more water than vinegar, because the vinegars amount of water, and the egg has 74% water. Once the acetic acid had removed the shell, the water and acid will fill the egg, returning with a result of an enlarged egg. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. DATA/OBSERVATIONS: DAYS 1 3 CIRCUMFERENCE (cm) 14.5 15.7 LIQUID LEVEL (ml) 300 285 with egg 200 without OBSERVATIONS 50 mils displaced. Lots of foam on egg Rubber like feeling and 85 mils displaced. Egg absorbed lots of vinegar, and inside the shell was dense. Also shell was almost 100%

CONCLUSION: In this lab, we studied the effects of osmosis. We used vinegar as our liquid to show the example of many water molecules going from an area of high concentration (vinegar) to an area of low concentration (egg). The high concentration of the water in the vinegar went through the selectively permeable membrane, into the low concentration of the egg, making our groups egg swell about 3.0 centimeters from its original circumference. Our groups circumference was 0.3 centimeters larger than the 7th grade average, which was 2.7 centimeters. My hypothesis was that the water from the vinegar would flow into the egg. My hypothesis was correct 100% of the time. ANALYSIS What caused the eggshell to dissolve was the vinegar. It was the vinegar because this type of liquid is a weak acid. It has acetic acid in it, which can make the shell of the egg dissolve into smaller and smaller pieces, until it has finally gotten to the part where the shell will be almost all disintegrated 100%. The difference in the two measurements was 3.4 centimeters. The expansion for period seven group threes egg was about 1.125 centimeters per day. For group seven, it was about 0.275 centimeters per day. These groups could have gotten different results because of possibly wrong measuring. I say that instead of saying that there was too much water in the vinegar, or more vinegar in one beaker than another, because we had measured the vinegar carefully in each beaker, and put them all in the same spot, leaving us with the only answer of the measurements being wrong or off. All cells need water, because it will keep them at a regular temperature, it will keep their shape, it will keep them hydrated, and it can also keep things flowing.
