MODELING OSMOSIS (LAB)

Anna Runnfeldt 6 Period Science 10-11-13 Modeling Osmosis

PROBLEM: Which way will water flow when a raw egg is placed in 250ml of vinegar? HYPOTHESIS: If a raw egg is placed in vinegar (water) and left for four days, then the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. THEORY: Osmosis is the diffusion of water from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration across a selectively permeable membrane. I hypothesized that the water would go into the egg because I know that when vinegar and the eggshell come in contact, the eggshell dissolves, which now lets the water molecules go into the egg. The percentage of water in an egg is about 74% and the percentage of water in the vinegar is about 95%. Osmosis states that the water will flow into the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. PROCEDURE: 1. Measure circumference of a raw egg using string and a ruler in cm. 2. Place egg in beaker and fill with 250 mL of vinegar. 3. Record observations. 4. Measure circumference for 4 days and record observations. CONCLUSION In this lab we were testing Osmosis by seeing which way water would flow if we left an egg in vinegar for four days. The water molecules went through the selectively permeable membrane, from high concentration to low concentration causing it to expand. In this possess, my groups egg expanded 3.4 centimeters compared to the class average of 2.6. I hypothesized that if a raw egg is placed in vinegar and left for four days, then the water will flow into

the egg from an area of high concentration through the membrane into an area of low concentration causing the egg to expand. My hypothesis was correct. ANALYSIS The eggshell dissolved by acetic acid from the vinegar coming into contact with the eggshell causing it to dissolve, to reveal the selectively permeable membrane. The difference in expansion between group 3 and 7 was 3.4 centimeters. Group 3s egg seemed to expand 1.1 cm a day and group 7s egg seemed to expand 0.4 cm a day. These groups probably got different results because one egg may have been bigger in the start or one group might have measured incorrectly. Cells need water for many reasons. The main reasons are to keep your body hydrated, which keeps you at a good temperature, and to maintain the cells form or shape.
