Content Standard(s): ELA (K) 1. Exhibit phonemic awareness, including identifying and categorizing phonemes, orally blending phonemes into one syllable words, segmenting one syllable words into phonemes, and rhyming. ELA (K) 5. Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose informative or explanatory texts in which they name what they are writing about and supply some information about the topic.[W.K.2] Local/National Standards: Approximate Duration of the Lesson: 61 to 90 minutes Materials and Equipment: Picture rhyme cards Big book The Cat in the Hat by: Dr. Seuss Rhyming word sticks Journals Technology Resources Needed: Computer with Internet access LCD projector Smart boards

Background/Preparation: The teacher should prepare to have rhyming cards for each child. The teacher should prepare all work pages ahead of time. The page should be available to project with the Smart board. Procedures/Activities: 1. Show the students two rhyming picture cards (for example, cat/hat). Explain that rhyming words have the same sound at the end of the word. Continue this activity by passing out rhyming word picture cards to each child. Have the students identify the pictures and say the rhyming words. 2. Visit the following website to practice rhymes with the students. Use a projection device so the whole class can participate in the activities.(www.seusville.com) 3. Read the story The Cat in the Hat. Ask students to listen for rhyming words. After the second time, close the book and repeat some of the lines, leaving off the final rhyming words. Have the children provide the missing word. After children have provided some of

the rhyming words, repeat the same sentence, and ask children to think of other words that would work with the sentence. 4. At the end of the lesson, have each student dictate a sentence using rhyming words. (The cat sat on the mat). Assessment Strategies: The teacher will check the students dictated sentences for accurate rhyming words. Extension: More advanced learners will give a rhyming word to match a given word. Remediation: Students who may need extra practice can listen to a CD by Dr. Jean Feldman, Rime Time (Sing to Learn with Dr. Jean). In small group, student can practice with rhyming word cards.
