STEM(PBL) PROJECTS POLICY

Making a science fair project is not mandatory for high school students any more. However please keep in mind that in order to graduate with a recommended or distinguished plan you may need to make one or two science fair projects. Please consult this with your guidance counselor. Instead of science fair, this year we will be conducting a science festival in our school. Students will demonstrate their STEM projects on this day. Student will be responsible for everything of his/her project.

MAKE UP TESTS AND QUIZZES If you are absent on a day that a test or quiz is given it is your responsibility to make up the missed test or quiz after school (Students need to bring a formal excuse report such as doctor report) . You have one week to make up any missed tests or quizzes. If you do not make up missed tests or quizzes within one week you will earn %0 F on the test or quiz. LATE ASSIGNMENT If a student does not return his/her assignment on time ,his/her grade will be graded 10pts less for every late day until 50pts(include weekends). That means student can take maximum 50pts after 5 late days even if assignment is maximum graded. ATTENDANCE If you are absent you are responsible for all material missed. It is your responsibility to check with me the very next day that you return to school or contact a classmate.

Parent Communication, Student/Parent Gmail Accounts

Parents/Guardians fulfill a very important role in their young adults education. Parents/Guardians are encouraged to participate in their students learning by checking for assignments and test dates online, checking notebooks for assignments, aiding students in projects or homework, and sharing applicable knowledge or expertise with their child. Parents are encouraged to initiate contact with the teacher to track student progress. It is the belief at Harmony that the triad of the parent, teacher and student must be maintained in order to maximize student achievement. Communication is vital to maintaining the triad, and the Harmony Science Academy database at http://hsagp.org/ allows parents/guardians to access their children's school information via the Internet. By signing up over the web and coming to the school to receive a user name and password, parents can see assignments, grades, attendance, and school information. Communication is vital to maintaining the triad, so I will ask that all students and parents provide me with a Gmail student and parent email account. Student Gmail account and related services that are associated with this account will be used for many different assignments and projects. Through these email accounts, I will be able to post important documents, and remind students of important dates, competitions, and tests. I will also email parents if a students grade falls below a 75 (C), or to alert parents of any necessary syllabus changes. -Students Gmail account** must follow certain format: firstname.lastname.harmony@gmail.com. -Student Gmail account and related services that are associated with this account are to be used only for some assignments and STEM projects. -Student is responsible to provide his/her Gmail account information to the parents. -Parent Gmail accounts can be in any format they wish. Using Student/Parent Gmail accounts is a pilot program that we are testing in our campus this year. Please provide your Gmail address if you have one, and if you dont, please create one for this class. Thanks for supporting our new program; our Science Department really appreciates your effort. I will also encourage parents and students to email me with any questions or concerns they may have. If a family does not have access to a computer at home, please let me know ASAP so that I may make alternate arrangements for notifications.

Harmony Science Academy Grand Prairie

Clubs are for the students who are highly-engaged and interested in working further on demos/experiments as additional optional activities related with to the demonstrations/experiments and/or assignments.
4. There will be no more school-wide science fair for high school. Rather, there will

a science festival during the open house for the schools, which was usually held on one of the Saturdays of the first two weeks of February. All parents and students are welcome ! Benefits and Outcomes of STEM PROJECT

Schools achieve nearly all of T-STEM benchmarks mentioned in the T-STEM blueprint. Students learn and practice the conceptual skill of TEKS objectives for EOCSTAAR test by working on DEMONSTRATIONS. Students learn and practice the scientific process skills of TEKS objectives for EOC-STAAR test by working on EXPERIMENTS. Students who take the Research & Design Course, and those students who are successful in EOC standards, will choose GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIR(virtual international science fair) as a STEM Projects in order to be able to participate in an international science fair projects and city-wide science fairs. Students who participated in GOOGLE SCIENCE FAIR increase their chance for college acceptance. In addition to begin an item on their resume, their science fair research papers, for each year, will be completed and ready when they submit their projects to the Google Science Fair. The Google Science Fair projects that are successfully completed by students satisfy two out of four requirements to graduate from the Distinguished Achievement Plan, which is the top diploma program in Texas high schools. There is no longer a need for school-wide science fairs. Students online science fair projects will be graded during the entire year by science teacher and judged by Google. The number of science fair students per teacher will decrease compared with the previous years. The teachers will, thus, have more time to facilitate and support their students projects. When students construct their websites and make movies of their STEM PROJECTS

17

Harmony Science Academy Grand Prairie

Students learn: To submit their works online; To use scientific language when they are presenting scientific works; To construct websites and make movies without violating copyrights rules, etc.; and To design new scientific activities.

Science teachers: Will conserve and free-up valuable time. Thus, teachers will be able to dedicate more time to instruction. Can give instant and continuous feedback. Can observe and monitor incremental improvements in all assignments through one page throughout the entire year. Can easily apply interdisciplinary teaching and learning methods; and Can organize online contests and science fairs that can be judged on a worldwide stage. Thus, students are no longer limited in terms of the possible number of judges and judging time. Schools: Will have a collection/archive of students' STEM activities/ projects; and Will be able to complete nearly all of the STEM BENCHMARKS with their evidence as a stem school.

When STEM projects are presented during high school OPEN HOUSE as a SCIENCE FESTIVAL to parents, school staff and 8th graders with their parents who are interested in Harmony High Schools: Parents will be more involved and informed regarding students STEM activities; All 8th grade students with their parents will be able to receive more information about STEM activities, teachers, science classes and labs. Such direct interaction is much more effective than a few teachers or administrators simply giving a PowerPoint presentation in school cafeteria. Students have a chance to present their works to the visitors, school staff and visitors. In addition to the goals of science-math teaching, these activities significantly contribute to the increase of social intelligence, language and presentation skills, and marketing skills for student presenters.
