Section One: Historical, Philosophies, Trends There are lot of different educational philosophies in the history of the Athenian Greeks, Spartan Greeks, and the Romans. These three groups had different beliefs about the body and the sprits. One thing that they believed was to make sure that all the military training was done in their Physical Education programs. They adopted this program, so that they would be able to stay in shape for the wars. When they adopted this program, it showed a lot of influences with Military, Social, and Political. Modern programs in Physical Education in the United States today, were borrowed primarily from the philosophies, activities, and developments of Europeans. It was smart to have their military training in their Physical Activity program; this would help them stay in shape for when they headed off to war. If we sent our service people to war, and they were not in shape, they not do really well out there. They would always be really tired. But since being in shape, one could be able to stay up longer and they would have more energy. Then they would feel more confident about being there. For one, they wouldnt be in shape. Another reason is that they would know how to stay in shape for the war if they were forced to be in Physical Education. Section Two: Changing Philosophies in Physical Education, Fitness, and Sports There have been many changes in Education philosophies since the early days. Things that have changed from the past are Title IX, which was adopted in 1972. They put this law in because they didnt have enough sports for girls, and they wanted girls to be equally with boys. I believe that this was the best thing; I think that everyone should be treated equal, no matter what sex, religion, or race. we should promote that we should have the same and equal rights as everyone else.

There are flaws about Title IX. One is that girls sports dont get the same amount of money as the boys do. However, the government will fund both sports the same about of money. The fan base will support more boy sports than girl sports. I believe that the boys should be funded more money due to the income that they bring in. If one watches the television, they hardly show girls sports on T.V. This means that the population that watches sports are more interested in guys sports more than women sports. Section Three: Past Experiences in Physical Education, Fitness, and Sports When I was in middle school, I really didnt like P.E. because I didnt like when we played Dodge Ball. I was not very athletic back in those days. When I played it, it wasnt really fun because I would always get hit in the head with the ball, or I would be the last one chosen. I didnt really like the feeling that this game gave me. I would always try my hardest to win at the game, but I would always be the first one out. We would play Dodge Ball only on rainy days, so that made me not like rainy days. When moving into high school, everyone has their favorite year. My favorite year, in high school, was my sophomore year. That year was the first year that I didnt have to take P.E.; I decided to take Weight Training. Weight Training was a lot different than P.E. P.E. wasnt for me; I didnt like how someone would tell me what activity/sport I had to play for that day. However, in weight training, the teacher would tell me what to do, but I would have many choices to choose from, and it was my responsibility to finish the task. In P.E. I wouldnt have to really try to finish the task. I could have been lazy in Weight Training; however, that would have been cheating your way out of it. In life, you cant cheat your way out of things. In Weight Training, if you didnt do all the lifts, than you wouldnt be getting as strong. If one is in shape, then they would not be part of the overweight population. This is a great habit to be getting into.

One would want to stay healthy there whole life. Another thing that Weight Training taught me was how to push myself to the fullest, and never give up. This is great life skill to know, because if something is not fun, you have to learn how to just fight through the pain, and/or you find a way to make it fun so you are excited to do it. I want students to get more interactive with the sport/activity that we would be doing for that week. I want them to have as much fun as possible. I would have a student teach the class once a week, so they would be able to be in charge at least once. I would do this so that each student wouldnt always be told what to do; they would have their one chance of being in charge. They would be able to do whatever they wanted that was related to the material. I want to change the stereotype out of Physical Education, from an easy class, and make it a challenging class. I would also play games that were not in regular everyday sports. I would play Cricket, Lacrosse, and Rugby. I would play games that no one really knows how to play, so someone would have to actually have to teach them how to actually play the game. This would give them more experience and they would be able to learn the game better. Section Four: Professional Opportunities When teaching transferable skills, I would make sure that we played games in big and little groups. Some games that we play would be Basketball, Tennis (Doubles), and baseball. These sports seem really simple; however, it teaches a lot of life skills. These three sports will teach the students how to work together. These games you cant just play with one player; you have to use multiple players. When using multiple players, one can start to develop play/strategies. Another thing that these sports could teach a student is communication. In basketball, one would have to let his team teammate that has the basketball know that he/she is open, or when there is a shot, they need to talk to their other teammates, and let them know that

there is a shot. In baseball, the students need to communicate when they know they have a pop up, or what base to throw to. In tennis, they need to communicate when they have the ball because there are two people, but they usually never know who has the middle of the court. Lastly, when playing sports in general; the students have to learn how to respect their other team. They will show good sportsmanship at all times. I would encourage these skills in my classroom. I would give them examples of how these skills are important in real life. Communication is a huge thing. Everywhere you work, one is going to have to communicate with his/her boss, co-workers, or just the outside world. If one lacks in one of these skills, then it will be rough staying with a job, but there are always things that you can do to fix these skills. Employee need to have people skills too, and they need to be able to be nice to people. For students who dont have good people skills, I would teach them to get out of their shyness, so they would be able to develop people skills. I would do this by making them introduce themselves to someone in the class. If they can do that for every student, then they will be able to build confidence and will get out of the bubble faster. They need to acquire confidence and to stand in front of a crowd; they never know when they will be in this situation in life. Section Five: Professional Goals In the Physical Education field, most people want to become a teacher because one either play sports or you have been into sports. However, they hardly have goals that they want to accomplish. They want to be there because they want to be a coach in sport at the school. For myself, I want to change a couple of things about Physical Education; I would like to see more interaction, instead of the teacher always standing in front of the classroom teaching. This would

keeps the students interacted with the sports and the other students. This is a great thing in the real world because it works on ones communication. This would also keep the students on their toes because they would have to know the sport fully to teach it. However, I wouldnt want the students to stress very much over this, so I would make it more participation points, where if they did it, than they get points for the day. This would be a great motivator for them to do well on it. Everyone has goals that they want to accomplish in their life time. I have a couple of short term goals that I would love to reach in the next year. I would love to leave the College of Southern Idaho with my A.A. in Secondary Education with an emphasis in Physical Education. Then, when I get that degree, I want to move onto to a big division one school, so I can pursue my goal in baseball, and get my BA in Secondary Education. Pursuing my baseball goal would give me a great chance on getting a coaching job at a high school. My long term goals are that I would love to teach at Benicia High School, where I am an alumni. After I have taught there for a couple of years, I would apply to be one of the baseball coaches, and then try to work myself up to the Varsity Head Coach. I would love to take over their baseball program. When I have these two accomplished, I would like to be the head of the Physical Education program at the high school, so that I would be able to run the Physical Education department the way I wanted to run it.
