HOOT HOOT HOORAY 2ND/3RD GRADE

Welcome! I am so excited to be your childs teacher this year! We are going to have a great year together. Please feel free to call or email me whenever you have a question, concern, or success you would like to share. You can reach me by email me at dscroggins@sunol.k12.ca.us We will also have a class website, which is currently under construction, that I will be emailing out to you soon! Im looking forward to an amazing year! Parent Volunteers To make our classroom as efficient as can be we need several weekly volunteers. Volunteers are essential to our classroom community. If you cannot volunteer weekly and would still like to volunteer we will have many other opportunities for volunteers throughout the school year. Please complete the Parent Volunteer form and fill out what times you are available. Volunteers are required to have a current TB test and a completed confidentiality form turned into the office. It is school policy that all volunteers check into the office upon their arrival. Thank you!

Welcome to Ms. Scroggins Class Room 305

Parent Involvement I encourage all parents to take an active role in their childs learning. As your child is doing their best in the classroom they also need a supportive home environment to achieve their ultimate academic success. OWL Folder Your child has received a yellow OWL family link folder. Please check this folder nightly and return the folder to school everyday. Important information from the school, behavior notes, and homework will be sent home in this folder. Newsletter Each Friday your child will bring home our class Newsletter. This will help keep you updated about upcoming important dates, special announcements, and what we are up to in class.

Homework Each Friday your child will bring home a homework cover sheet with directions. Homework will typically be a concept that we have learned in class and then reinforced at home. All homework should be completed and turned in on the following Friday. Please set up a homework spot at home where your child has access to you and can work quietly. You should set aside 30-45 minutes a night for your child to complete their homework. If you are having difficulty with the homework please feel free to contact me so we can work together to create a plan for your child. Thanks! Birthday Policies
This year I am asking that in lieu of an edible birthday treat we have a book birthday treat. Please feel free to bring in to share or donate your childs favorite book on their birthday. You may also bring in a non-edible gift (pencil, erasers or stickers) to pass out at the end of the day. We are permitted to pass out birthday invitations at school if the entire class, all the girls in the class or all the boys in the class are invited. Thanks for helping out with this so that no one feels left out

Behavior Management System I have high expectations for my students behavior. It is important that they know we are in constant communication as well. Therefore I will be sending home a weekly progress/behavior report with their behavior, class work and homework for the week on Fridays. Please sign and return their weekly note in their OWL folder on Monday. I expect positive behavior in our class. When a room agreement is broken and/or students are not making good choices students will be talked to. Below are the behavior Consequences.
1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Verbal Warning Move name down on Behavior Clip Chart Loss of recess/apology letter/etc Email home or note in OWL folder Conference with Principal or Parents

Morning Arrival Routine School begins at 8:30. Students are to line up in two straight lines, in number order outside of the classroom and wait for instructions. When entering the class students know to empty out their backpacks, put their OWL folders away, and start their daily challenge bell work. If you arrive after 8:30 please have your child check in at the office. We have already had quite a few tardies- which interrupt instructional time.

The Years Curriculum: Reading Students will be learning different reading strategies to apply as they read as well as working at their ability level in bi-weekly reading groups. They will be assessed with DRA 2 and other various assessments to place them in their specific reading groups. We will be following the Readers Workshop model of a mini-lesson, followed by independent reading and wrapped up with reflecting and sharing. We also have daily Silent Reading Time after lunch or at the end of the day. Writing We will be using Teaching the Qualities of Writing by Ralph Fletcher, which is a Writers Workshop model that focuses on students finding a love for writing and writing about things they enjoy writing about. Math We will be using the Harcourt Math text. Concepts will be taught by strand and each grade level will receive their own specific textbooks. Social Studies & Science This year we will be covering 3rd grade state standards. We will be learning about Sunol history, Ohlone Native Americans, Autobiographies/ Biographies, Adaptations, Local plants, the Ocean, and Solar System.

California State Standards: You can find the standards at http://www.cde.ca.gov/be/st/ss/ Grading Report cards will be based on the state standards on a scale of 13. 1 Indicates an area of concern that the student is not meeting the grade level standard expected at the time of the report. 2 Indicates that the student is progressing towards the standard. 3 Indicates that the student demonstrates proficiency of the standard.

Thank you for coming!
