Assembly and Wiring of a J-Head Hotend

Jump to: navigation, search How to assemble and wire a J-Head Hotend Buy one here: http://secure-www.openhardware.co.za/cart/index.php?id_product=24&controller=product 1. Unpack your J-Head: You should have a Hotend, Thermistor and Resistor

2. You should also have access to narrow Kapton tape for the assembly. This will be provided to you free of charge during our Printer Build Courses, else you would need to buy a small roll (http://secure-www.openhardware.co.za/cart/index.php?id_product=34&controller=product)

3. Use a small piece of kapton, folded around the legs of the thermisor, to insulate the two terminals. If they touch or short you will not get a valid temperature reading so make very sure they are insulated all the way to the glass bead.

4. Solder short lengths of heat proof wire to the thermistor and resistor as shown

5. Put some heatshrink tubing over the ends of the Kapton tape to prevent it from unravelling (as you noticed it is not very sticky)

6. Insert the Resistor into the big hole in the J-Head Nozzle. If its too loose a wrapping of kitchen foil can help, if it's too tight, light (and carefully) sand it with very fine sandpaper - but dont sand it down so any metal sticks out.

7. Bend the Thermistor leads a little to make it easier to line up with the small hole

8. Insert Thermistor into the small hole

9. Tape the Thermistor in place with one loop of Kapton tape

10. Bend the Resistor legs upward so you can tape the resistor in place

11. Wrap the whole brass nozzle securely in Kapton tape. You can also secure the wires with some kapton and a cable tie to prevent stress fatigue

12. All done, ready to install into your Eckstruder!
