WAIMATE HIGH SCHOOL SOCIAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT UNIT: Tauiwi : They came to the land of Plenty YEAR: 8 ASSESSMENT

Achievement Objective: Students will be able to describe different settler groups and their experiences and to be connected with their family/ whakapapa. Inquiry Process Specific Learning Outcome: Students will be able describe end gather information using the Somers Library, Newspapers, Magazines, and other sources such as the Internet; to process the information accurately and to record findings in a logical, appropriate manner. Task: To become a family detective and find out more information about your familys histor y. You will choose one family member to find out information about them and present back to the class

Requirements: From your family tree and identify a member to find out more information
about and answer the following questions

You must write them in your own words 1. A day in the life of your family member: Write four paragraphs of a diary 2. What did they do for a job either before they came to New Zealand or when they got here? 3. How old were they when they came here? And who did they come with? 4. How do you think they felt about moving to a new country? Write two paragraphs 5. What problems did they have when they came here? Write two paragraphs 6. How do you think their lives changed? 7. Name and write about two events that happened the year they moved to New Zealand.

Presentation Process:
You must include the following tick when complete A map of where your ancestors came from A map of New Zealand and where they set up their first home A timeline of events in their life Your name and class At least two flags that you have found out from your family tree Questions answered above You have written down where you have got your information from You have used three different sources of information (Person, book, internet) You have glued this on the back of the sheet
