1. Standards & benchmarks Communication Communicate in Languages Other Than English Standard 1.1: Students engage in conversations, provide and obtain information, express feelings and emotions, and exchange opinions. Standard 1.2: Students understand and interpret written and spoken language on a variety of topics. Standard 1.3: Students present information, concepts, and ideas to an audience of listeners or readers on a variety of topics. Cultures Gain Knowledge and Understanding of Other Cultures Standard 2.1: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the practices and perspectives of the culture studied. Standard 2.2: Students demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between the products and perspectives of the culture studied. Connections Connect with Other Disciplines and Acquire Information Standard 3.1: Students reinforce and further their knowledge of other disciplines through the world language. Standard 3.2: Students acquire information and recognize the distinctive viewpoints that are only available through the world language and its cultures. Comparisons Develop Insight into the Nature of Language and Culture Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own. Washington State K-12 World Languages Learning Standards.) 2.Course Description This course is a two-semester course, which seeks to develop basic skills in listening, speaking, and writing (gross-motor skills). Classroom discussion for each topic will be emphasized on mastering in listening, speaking, and understanding of the Chinese language. Classroom activities will cover activities pertaining to storytelling, arts & crafts, songs and practice. For the benefit of non-native Chinese learners, English is used for explanation and translation of lessons in class. 3. OBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE: Base on the knowledge and skills that students have learned before, at the end of this course, participates should be able to : Pronounce some the phonetic symbols and tones (PINYIIN). Read and understand some Chinese characters in the materials. Use the simple sentences to express their idea in Chinese. Talk surface of Chinese culture that related to topics. 4. PROCEDURES FOR ACCOMPLISHING THESE OBJECTIVES: In order to achieve the objectives above, the teaching methods will be used through the course as following: Teacher lectures: Demonstrate how to pronounce and how to write the Chinese characters and sentences. Visual aids: Videos to show students how to write the Chinese Characters. Pictures will be used to explain the meaning of vocabulary and sentences. Group study and discussions: Students are requested to work as a team to understand and use the language. Oral reports: Students are requested to speak Chinese out after their have learned it. 5.Assessment/ Evaluation

There are five categories for Assessment and Evaluations are included students participations, students learning behavior, Chinese peaking, homework and test/exam.
