Millennium Goals: Turkey and Haiti

Brynn Clarke Mariah Holmes

Eradicate Extreme Poverty and Hunger

Overall, The MDG target has been met, but 1.2 billion people still live in extreme poverty.

Turkey
As of 2007 the poverty standing was 0.01% and has now been completely eradicated.

Haiti
In 2003, 80% of people were living below the poverty line. Today, Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.

Achieve Universal Primary Education

If current trends continue, the world will not meet the goal of universal primary education by 2015.

The literacy rate in Turkey has risen to 97.4% and the net enrolment ratio in primary education is at 98.2%.

Access to education in Haiti is very poor and the current literacy rate is at 48%.

Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women

Turkey is still having some trouble with gender equality although some progress has been made. 7.8% of women are illiterates and only 29.3% of women participate in the labor force. Although Haiti has made significant progress as far as womens rights, many gender disparities still exist. 26% of all women and girls have been victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

Reduce Child Mortality

Big gains have been made in child survival, but efforts must be redoubled to meet the global target.

The current infant mortality rate in Turkey is 23 deaths per every 1,000 births.

The current infant mortality rate in Haiti is 50 deaths in every 1,000 live births.

Improve Maternal Health

Maternal mortality has declined by nearly half since 1990, but falls far short of the MDG target.

In Turkey the current number of maternal deaths per 100,000 live births is 20.

In Haiti the current number of maternal deaths is 350 in every 100,000 live births. Although health care has improved, Haiti still has a long way to go in order to compare with countries like Turkey.

Combat HIV/AIDS, Malaria and Other Diseases

The incidence of HIV is declining steadily in most regions; still, 2.5 million people are newly infected each year.

In Turkey, the number of cases of HIV was 557 in 2010 and the number of malaria cases was 87 in 2010 out of a population of 74 million.

The risk degree for infection of major diseases is high in Haiti. The adult prevalence rate for HIV/AIDS is at 1.9%. This accounts for 120,000 people currently living with HIV or AIDS in Haiti.

Ensure Environmental Sustainability

Access to safe drinking water is currently at 97.8% and the proportion of terrestrial and marine protected areas is at 5.05%. CO2 emissions for Turkey stand at 299,105 tons.
The environmental degradation in Haiti is the worst in the Western hemisphere due to its economic decline. 69% of Haitis total population has access to improved drinking water. If the trend continues, it is likely that Haiti will reach the MDG.

Develop a Global Partnership for Development

Turkey has provided significant assistance to CIS countries as well as other in the region. The Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency also completed 2,956 financial and technical assistance projects as of 2008. Official development assistance from Turkey has also reached 1,273 billion USD in 2011. The country is trying to achieve global partnerships through commercial and industrial development strategies. The country's total debt service is 1.8% of the GDP in Haiti. Although internet and phone access has increased, Haiti remains far behind most other countries in this regard. It is difficult for Haiti to provide aid to any countries, as it stands in so much need even three years following the 2010 earthquake.
