Mobile Learning Activity - Lesson Plan

Learning Objective
What grade or student population are you planning for? 3rd What are the standards or benchmarks you are trying to address (please list them)? Dont forget to include the technology standards that will be covered in your lesson. S.IP.01.11 Make purposeful observation of the natural world using the appropriate senses. S.IP.01.13 Plan and conduct simple investigations. S.IA.01.13 Communicate and present findings of observations. S.IA.01.14 Develop strategies for information gathering (ask an expert, use a book, make observations, conduct simple investigations, and watch a video). L.OL.E.4 Classification- Organisms can be classified on the basis of observable characteristics. L.OL.03.41 Classify plants on the basis of observable physical characteristics (roots, leaves, stems, and flowers). L.OL.03.42 Classify animals on the basis of observable physical characteristics (backbone, body coverings, limbs). 3-5.TC.1. use basic input and output devices (e.g., printers, scanners, digital cameras, video recorders, projectors) 3-5.TC.4. demonstrate proper care in the use of computer hardware, software, peripherals, and storage media 3-5.TC.5. know how to exchange files with other students using technology (e.g., network file sharing, flash drives) What should students be able to do and/or know as a result of this lesson? Scientifically students should be able to identify traits and classify organisms they encounter in their everyday life. Technologically students will know how to take photographs using a digital device and then upload theses images to a computer. Students will then know how to post these images to a shared website. What are the students going to be doing during this lesson? Students will be asked to take 5 photographs of 5 different types of organisms they commonly encounter. Students will then share their finding with their classmates. What support will they need to be successful? Students will need visual examples of organisms and methods for classifying those organisms appropriately. Students will need a reasonable amount of time to take the photos at home and time in class if necessary to transfer those files. Student will be provided with a set of instructions for sending files to Flickr. 1. Add a New Contact- farm78must@photos.flickr.com

How will you facilitate the process of students learning with the mobile technology? Will they work in groups? Will they work in a computer lab or classroom setting? Will you have extra teachers/adults/older students available to help troubleshoot? Taking the initial few photographs may require some support as will the uploading of files to a computer and then to a website. Ideally the photos will be taken at home with the assistance of parents or family. Loading the files may require teacher assistance. What mobile technology will be used in this lesson? Cell phone, tablet or digital camera. Computer with Web access. Flickr website. How will the technology be used to enhance the learning process? To aid in the documentation and description of their observations. Additionally sharing/collaborating their findings by uploading. What do they need to know before participating in this lesson? Students should know that organisms are classified by common traits such as fur, wings, scales etc. These traits are then organized into categories such as mammals, insects, plants etc. Also students will need to know how to take pictures with their device and how to upload them to a computer. How will you assess student learning in this lesson? The student has provided 5 examples of different organisms. The student has provided at least one justification in the form of a trait to classify each organism accurately. How will you know that the learning objective was met? Students will be able to classify both familiar and unfamiliar organisms based on observable traits.
