Purpose: To use the mole concept in the lab Materials: small beakers, eye droppers, teaspoon, graduated cylinder,

balance Chemicals: Sulfur powder, aluminum foil of various sizes, copper wire, magnesium wire, powdered carbon, sodium chloride, sucrose For the following problems: A. Write a brief description of your procedure B. Collect data, keeping in mind your use of significant digits in measurement C. Use conversion factors to solve the problems PROBLEMS: 1.) Determine the number of atoms present in a level teaspoon of aluminum powder A. Mass the beaker. Add a teaspoon of aluminum powder. Mass the beaker with the aluminum powder. Subtract the mass of the beaker to find the mass of the powder. Divide that number by the atomic mass of aluminum. Multiply by Avogadro's constant (6.02*10^23) B. Beaker: 34.237g Beaker with aluminum: 36.633g Aluminum powder: 2.369g C. 2.369g X (1mol/26.982g) X (6.02 X 10^23 atom/mol) = 5.29 X 10^22 atoms

Concluding Statement: There are 5.29*1022 atoms in 2.369 grams of aluminum powder.

2.) Determine how many level teaspoons of iron are needed to find 1.00 mol of iron powder A. Weigh the empty beaker. Add a level teaspoon of iron to the beaker, and then weigh again. Subtract the initial weight of the beaker from the second reading to find the mass of the iron. Divide this number by the molar mass of iron. Divide 1 mole by this number. B. Beaker: 28.696 g With iron: 34.287g Iron: 5.591g C. 5.591g X (1mol/55.845g) = 0.1001 mol

1mol/0.1001mol = 9.988 level teaspoons

Concluding Statement: To find 1.00 mol of iron powder, 9.988 level teaspoons are needed.

3.) Determine how many atoms of zinc are present in a 2.00cm^2 piece of zinc metal (you cannot cut the foil) A. Weigh the 2.00cm^2 piece of zinc metal. Divide by the molar mass of zinc. Multiply the number of moles present by the Avogadro's constant. B. Zinc: 1.032g C. 1.032g X (1mol/65.38g) X (6.02 X 10^23 atoms/mol) = 9.50 X 10^21 atoms

Concluding Statement: There are 9.50 X 10^21 atoms of zinc present in a 2.00 cm^2 piece of zinc metal.

4.) Assuming that baby oil is C23H48, Determine the volume of baby oil that would provide 6.00 x 10^22 molecules of oil A. Weigh the cylinder. Add 4.0ml of baby oil to the cylinder, weigh again. Subtract the initial weight of the cylinder from the second weight. Divide this weight by the molar mass of C23H48.

Multiply by Avogadro's constant. Divide (6.00 X 10^22 atoms) by the previous answer. B. Cylinder: 44.436g With baby oil (4.0ml): 47.668 Baby oil (4.0ml): 3.232g Baby oil (1.0ml): 0.808g C. (23.00mol X 12.011g/mol) + (48.00mol X 1.008g/mol) = 324.64g/mol 0.808g/ml X (1mol/324.64g) X (6.02 X 10^23atoms/mol) = 1.50 X 10^21ml (6.00 X 10^22atom)/(1.50 X 10^21atom/ml) = 40.0ml Concluding Statement: 40.0ml of baby oil is needed to provide 6.00 X 10^22 molecules of oil.
