Zackery Barker Taking Sides Issue 11 1. Mr. Joseph E.

Balog, is making the statement, that a Human Papillomavirus vaccination should be mandatory for young girls. He makes it clear that he thinks this would be more effective than any other action in order to protect females from this STI. He states that the other prevention ideas such as discussing sex and protection and abstinence are not going to cut it. He compares it to the Polio crisis in the 50s, that the widespread disease was prevented by the help of a vaccination. This vaccination would be very influential to help protect all women, that is also would help prevent cervical cancer. 2. Balog states that getting rid of the STI and preventing it is an act of Beneficence and that if we dont provide that for those people we are causing an act of malevolence. Simply not giving to them something that could help save people and reduce harm is wrong. He is providing the point that it should not be withheld simply because parents want to protect their children and teach them by their ways. Is an act of autonomy of the parents and that it is affecting their children by not helping them with the proper care. The justice is that it should be provided to all, and not be limited among the people. So if mandated it would in fact be given to all. 3. If mandated it would reduce the chances of cervical cancer, it would also reduce the STI itself, and it would be more effective than if we left it up to discussion by parents and awareness programs. 4. Balog doesnt believe that we can leave it up to parents to help prevent this STI because he doesnt think parents and awareness programs are enough to prevent. In essence it is inevitable to him. He also believes that this is going to be the most influential resolve for the public. That it will be the most effective because it is mandatory of course. 5. One issue provided is that it is expensive, and he doesnt provide a response for this issue. Also long-term efficacy is not known, his response is that there is hope for the future science and its goals. 6. The cause and effect is that women will hopefully be protected against the STI and if they follow through with proper testing they will be protected against Cervical Cancer. People will continually be protected and offered that protection. We in a sense need this because we cant stop the cause of sexually active adolescents and adults that results in the spread of STI and STDs. So we mandate a vaccine that prevents and protects. Because of this people will be upset, people dont want to be forced they dont want to have to pay. They dont want to be mandated to do something that may be against their beliefs and so this will possibly result in a lot of unhappy people. 7. The major thesis of the no/opposing side is that there is not enough evidence to support the need for a mandate on the vaccination. The vaccination is beneficial but they still dont know the long term effects, they also dont know how the public would take it,

because it would be mandated by the government they state it is ill advised. So they dont take the position of the vaccination is bad, simply make it voluntary and watch over it before considering making it mandatory. 8. The major concerns of the opposing Side is not much is known about the long term effects of the vaccination because it is still new. Also it shouldnt be mandated yet because it doesnt compare to those that were mandated in the past such as polio, and thirdly doing so can result in a Backlash on the government. Not only on the government but the economy. 9. 10. I think that the author does agree in fact with the vaccination being available, he just doesnt want it to be mandatory. He has opinionated his thoughts on a lot of what could happen to the government simply because it is unknown and it is in the future so he cant provide much evidence. For example: trivializing these concerns is both inappropriate and unwise as a policy matter. While talking about the government mandating and going over the household. 11. Not at all, in his conclusion he states that vaccination is good voluntarily and it has many benefits. He is simply against mandating the vaccination while there is not enough evidence to do so. 12. If we were to do the test it out voluntarily over time we could learn more about the vaccination and in the meantime to really focus on making people aware and giving people the rights and also keeping the government within its lines. This is going to help us understand what we really need and also keep an open mind to mandating it in the future if needed. 13. The No side seemed to use more evidence because he took into account both sides and was much more open. This also left out his bias. He took into account what could possibly happen if they were to mandate it and why it could be beneficial. He had more support to his points as well. 14. I agreed and felt more impressed to agree with the No because he was so unbiased and open to mandating the vaccination later. He provided more evidence I felt and also he took into account what would happen if we did mandate it which left out the bias. He also made sure to state what he felt what was good to do in the meantime. 15. I agree with the No side so as far as mandating the vaccination for boys I would feel the same. I would gather more evidence as to why we need to do so, research the effects on a voluntary group and then decide after some time. 16. Once again we have already lived with influenza being an influential vaccination, so we know much more about the effects. Because it should be left to freedom of choice I think

that it should be left voluntary. Also I agree with prior statements that it isnt close to the historical justifications to make it mandatory.
