Dear spectators! Welcome to our interview! Today our guest is honored conductor of Kazakhstan Orak Jauruly.

Today we would like to have a talk with you about the educational system of your time and the musical schools for future generation to know. First of all would you mind introducing yourself to everyone please? Well, I was born on October 26, 1945 in Tomarly village of Atyrau region. In 1949 we moved to the Guryev city (that time Atyrau was called as Guryev) and I finished the first grade at Molotov school which was initially called Krupskaya. Our childhood was in the period of developing stages of stock raising just after the war. We werent hindered by the difficulty of the time. In general, our past was very interesting. We were willing to move forward and we knew the importance of learning. In spite of being very young we were all trying to help with the household. Every house had livestock to breed. We were breeding animals like camel and sheep. One day when I was grazing I heard an amazing sound of the orchestra from the radio receiver (that time they were radio receivers on each pillar). It was the Kurmangazy orchestra. They were playing kyus as Akbay, Kishkentay of Kurmangazy. Being inspired I went to the palace of pioneers to learn to play dombyra. There were not any skyscrapers and beautiful streets and boulevards, avenues, there were just little houses and mud. My father used to ride us on camel to school. Either my father or Saduakass father would ride us to school. One day when I was on the way from the pioneer house I was cleaning my shoes. At that time we used to have one pair of shoes for all seasons. Suddenly when I was cleaning my shoes I heard some musicI started to listen attentively. It was coming from a musical school named after Kurmangazy Sagyrbayuly. The history of that school is very interesting too. In 1949 the first music school was opened in Atyrau, it was the first one for whole Western part of Kazakhstan. I was introduced with the principle of that musical school. Then the aspiration to music brought me to the first grade of dombyra classes of Guryev Musical College. Thank you, you told that it was the very first musical school in Western part. Where and when was the first musical school opened on the whole Kazakh land?

The first music school named after Amre KAshaubayev was founded in Almaty city. In 1932 the educational establishment was called MusChorCombinat in Almaty as long as it included all musical instruments, choreography and drama classes. They found a young man in Leningrad when they were in search of qualified national staff for the school. He was a very famous academician Akhmet Zhubanov. The history of todays musical college started from that time. Nowadays it is called Tchaikovsky. After his arrival Akhan ( Akhmet Jubanov) invited famous people such as Brusilovskyi, Khamidyi to work with him and opened a folklore class to investigate and write Kazakh music. Prior to that, the whole world was introduced to Kazakh music in 1928 by the investigations of famous Russian researcher Alexander Victorovich Zatayevskyi. Having read his works the French famous writer Roben Rolan was amazed by our music and musical instruments. Initially, there were an ensemble of 11 people. It was a future famous Kurmangazy orchestra. That was exactly how it all started. Well, in general you are talking about the education system of music of that period. We believe that Kazakh tunes were well investigated and are still being investigated. The next question is about the musical schools of your time and current school. What was it like then and now? Are there any differences? Of course, there is a big difference between them. Nowadays there are many opportunities for children. Let us take an example of those compositions and plays, which we used to play in Conservatory. The schoolchildren used to play the same compositions at schools. Dont you think that it was indeed very good achievement? Undoubtedly Today, in our country there is at least one school in every village. Each school has national musical instruments and their own orchestra. The least number of students were accepted and admitted to conservatory (higher special musical schools) in our time - just approximately 10 people including dombyra, kobyz, bayan classes . Afterwards, in 1980th Gaziza Akhmetovna Jubanova were appointed as a dean of the conservatory. Those years they were accepting about 40 people each year to formulate a big faculty rather

than a small department. Nowadays there are orchestras everywhere in Kazakhstan. So it seems that they all had a great vision of the future. So what you mean is the reason of accepting more and more students each year was the huge interest of students in the music? Yes, they were very interested in it, their views to the future started from that time. For instance, the grandson of Gaziza Zhubanova is Aslan Borebay and he is a worldwide famous musician. Thank you for the answers, now I would like to ask you about your family. Your interest in music started when you heard the play of the orchestra from the radio receiver. So did you have anyone in your family who you admired and had a great impact on you for music? My father was illiterate. He couldnt write anything. However, he had a good memory and was good at memorizing. He could count any complex number in his mind and give the right result as nowadays computers. My fathers great dream was to give education for his children even when he was not educated himself. That time the most famous educational organization was the pedagogical college. My elder brother was accepted to study there but after his acceptance the World War II started. Than my sister was accepted to study but had to leave her education because of the War. They couldnt complete their education. But later on my brother completed his education and graduated the KazNU. Now he is a retired. All I want to say that even when my father was uneducated himself he wanted us to be well educated. Do you mean that he knew the importance of the education? Of course he did. When he went to War he couldnt write any single word. That is why he was worried about it. He was musician too. He used to sing the Terme of Kelder Abu Bakir. He played dombyra from his memories. Also, he and his contemporaries got together and had their valuable conversations. My brother used to play dombyra too. May be the part of art passed on me. The tunes of Seyilkhan Kusaiynov Mereke, Komsomol of Toksanbay Kyltuov were played in our Republic. What can you say about your family? Are there anybody who follows your way?

I have 3 sons. All of them are very close to music and play very well on dombyra and guitar. I have grandchildren with good hearing skills. Next question will be about our great Dombyra. In my opinion our dombyra have spread all over the world well. Please tell us about its history. I think that the history of dombyra started from the history of our Kazakh nation. Some people say that kyl kobyz is the kobyz of shamans. Also some think that dombyra appeared in the time of Al Farabi. That time it wasnt really dombyra but dombura. They were assembling in the palace of Khans and played dutar. I think that the ensemble and orchestra started from that period. Nowadays dombyra is made in top quality due to our masters. On 14 and 15 of October we are planning to have a Republic competition called ukili dombyra for masters who make national instruments. They will be assessed according to their acoustics and the quality of their instrument. In general, dombyra is highly developed. We were planning to go to Hollywood but after the circumstances with the explosion in US we couldnt go. But our famous band Ulytau had a chance to visit this country . Wherever there are Kazakhs there they will play dombyra. So, nowadays we have a musical school in our district. We have the information that this school was opened in 1949. What can you say about this school? For example you studied in music school, but what can you say about the musical educational places of modern time? Are there any differences? That time it was just one school for our district. And particularly Kazakhs were few. It was a Planning Committee. Iliyas Omarov was the head of the Ministry of Art. His support was great. I saw the letter that he sent to Moscow to the Central committee of Finance personally. He was writing about the 5 kazakh students amongst 500s in fortepiano class when the Republic was called Kazakhstan. So he influenced the opening of the two year courses for each 6 music college. That time all things had to be done with allowance of Moscow. It was the 60th. The best contribution of that time was the opening of 11 years specialized schools after Akhmet Zhubanov and Kulyaw Bayseitova in Almaty. Music school?

Yes. In this letter it was written that there should study children of shepherd. The 3rd of the 11 school of this kind was founded in Karagandy city. Many people graduated from these schools and the conservatory in Moscow and are very famous now. For example the President of Conservatory was the piano player Zhaniya Aubakirova, the president of Shabyt music academy Ayman Musakhodjayeva, Nakypbekovy sisters in England and Marat Beysengaliyev have become well known. It means our dombyra became famous. Yeas of course, dombyra and other national instruments. Orak Zhauyruly here we have collected your pictures from your career. It is from your school years when you were a pioneer. Could you please talk about your pioneer time, your clothes and way of life? As I have mentioned above the life was very hard. If we bought some clothes we had to wear them for many years. This picture is when I was 4 year old boy. This picture from your 4 grade? Yes. I have found it recently and trying to keep it as a memory. You can see the clothes of that time and the lifestyle. However, good behavior and manners were the most important aspect. Studying and showing respect to adults and so on. If we see that our teacher is coming we would all take our hats off and stand up as a sign of great respect to them. Now the times are very good and all the conditions. Everything is getting computerized. As I have told, every single family has to have good upbringing. We have to be patriots of our country. All students from school to the university have to study hard. The main things are labor, studying and good behavior. Only then, we can become one of the recognized country in the world arena. Then the others will recognize us wont they? Yes, I want our youth to have this kind of upbringing. Could you introduce us with this exact picture? This photo when you just married? Yes she is my wife When was it? October, 1970 These pictures are from your career as a conductor?

Yes, those are recent ones. Two years ago I gave the concert in Astana. The pictures were taken in that concert. And these photos were taken in Aktau city during the Days of Atyrau in Aktau. Here is a very famous singer Gafyz Esimov with me. This picture was taken one year ago. In Saint Petersburg there is a Kazakh Society. The chair of the Kazakh Society invited me and we gave a concert of 50 people and celebrated Nauryz. We released 4 albums. I have to mention the great event that this year is 190th birthday of Kurmangazy. The head of the Atyrau region Baktygozha Sagidenuly supported us to make the orchestra with 1000 people. So for all these 1000 people we gave the certificates. It will remain as a history for 50-100 years. This year for the 15th birthday of our capital city Astana we have participated in the festival Serper. Here is the certificate with the signature of the mayor of the region. Our congratulations! We understood that you have been inspired in music from your childhood. Now could you tell us about your achievements? Did you have all the honors you deserved? Yes, Honor of respect was given to me. We think that each work has to be valued. Actually, all these job that have been done as you already have 4 discs and competitions are the proofs that our music is well developed. Because in the past they were not any memories and history. That is why we are congratulating you with this valuable work. Now we would like to see you at the process of working. Working with your orchestra. They are our students. She graduated from our school and now studying at Nazarbayev University. Yes? In Astana So now they are working on the research work about education, art and music. She was asking me to help her that is why I would like to show the fragment of our work. So please, Sovettik Kazakhstan So I wish you prosperity in your work. In general, in the document of our school it is written that student could follow and continue the musical

education. However even if they could not continue they could gain an aesthetic knowledge. In short they would not be a bad man(joking) You mean all-rounded Yes, all- rounded. Other students are studying abroad: in America for instance. They were graduates of this musical school. That is why I wish you good luck in your life. In addition, I would like to append that the future of our Kazakh nation are people like you my dear. Now you are studying and graduating from such kind of great university that is why just lead the way! Thank you very much! We appreciate that you took your time for the lively interview even when you had urgent preparations. We wish you success in your job and talented students.
