DEPARTMENT OF NUTRITION AND DIETETICS INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL UNIVERSITY Module: Basic Epidemiology NDT 2235 Written Assignment and

Student Seminar
The ND1/11 cohort of 43 students shall be divided into 14 groups. Each group, consisting of 3/4 students, shall be assigned one of 6 epidemiological topics.

Part 1: Written Assignment (Informed on 6 February 2013)


(Individually assessed; weightage = 20% of total module marks) Each student must select one article (preferable different from others in the group) in the literature which is relevant to the topic assigned to the group and do a synopsis (summary) of the article. The article selected should be an original research. The synopsis should be no longer than four A4-pages (Font-size 12, New Roman Times, 1 spacing) and should include the following components: 1 2 3 Purpose/objectives of the study Research design Comment/critique the research design used Epidemiological aspects of the study. Why do you regard the paper you selected as an epidemiology study? What are the epidemiological indices in the study? Results and discussion

5. Conclusion on the overall findings. You should include ONE abbreviated table in your written assignment. This written assignment must be submitted to the Adminstrative Affairs Department (AAD), IMU by 4.00 pm, Monday 25 March, 2013. The original article selected by each student must be appended to the written assignment. Late submissions shall be penalised.

Part II: Group Presentation at Student Seminar on Wednesday 27 March 2013


(Group assessment; weightage = 10%) (Venues: Rooms 1.08, 1.09, 1.10 at Level 1, Bukit Jalil Campus) Each group shall summarise the overall findings on the assigned topic in a ( 25 + 10)-minutes oral presentation. Each student in the group shall speak for at least 5 minutes (on a specific area of the groups overall findings). The Q&A shall be posed by the assessors to the group concerned.
