Assignment # 4

Due date: Oct. 17, 2013 (3:50 pm) 1. Alternating current flows through a coaxial cable, the inner conductor of which is solid and is of radius a. Because of the skin effect, the current density distribution within the conductor in non (a 2r ) uniform and may be approximated by J (r ) = J 0 e , where J0 is the current density at the surface of the conductor. The return current is through the outer conductor, which consists of an infinitely thin cylindrical shell of radius b. Use Amperes law to calculate the magnetic field intensity everywhere. 2. In Spherical coordinates the potential of a dipole located at the origin is given by

(a) Use E= -grad and the above to calculate E for a dipole located in free space. (b) Calculate E directly by superimposing the E fields due to +q and q. Work in spherical coordinates.

3.

Determine the work done in carrying a Q= +5 C point charge from point A(0,-3,0) to point B(1,0,0) in a nonuniform electric field E=(5x+3y) ax+2x ay 3 az along (a) the shortest path, (b) the L-shaped path via the origin, and (c) along the parabola y =6x2 - 3x - 3, as shown below.
A -3 -2 -1 (a) (c) B X (b) 1 Y

4.

Two spheres, each of radius R and carrying uniform charge densities + and -, respectively, are placed so that they are partially overlap. Call the vector from the negative center to the positive center S. Show that the field in the region of overlap is constant, and find its value.
