Detailed Analysis of 2 Music Magazine Front Covers, Contents Pages and Double Page Spread (genre specific)

The magazine has one graphic feature of three men together. This gives anchorage to the text above the masthead which says The Vaccines and The Strokes record together in New York. This gives a teaser to the audience of what else the magazine will contain. The magazines coverline is an interview with Muse, whose lead band member is pictured on the cover of the magazine. The name of the band Muse is in a larger font size than the title and is across the main image at the bottom of the left hand side of the magazine. The writing is coloured neon yellow which highlights the coverline so that fans of Muse and the magazine will see it. Underneath the coverline is a slogan to the coverline which says Get ready for their most insane shows ever! The word insane suggests that the bands new gigs are going to be exciting and rebellious. Above the coverline is a pull quote from Muse which says Were bringing origin of symmetry to life The quote indicates that muse are sophisticated and experienced as a band.

The masthead is NME which stands for New Musical Express. It is situated in the top left hand corner and is in large white letters so it stands out against background. The main/central image is of the main band member of Muse. It has been shot from a low-angle which gives him power and parts of his face are in shadow which makes him look dark and mysterious. It is a close-up so the audience cannot see what he is wearing except from the collar of his shirt which is black as well as his hair being black. Also he has a serious expression on his face which indicates that he is professional and slightly rebellious and therefore reflects that his music might be slightly rebellious.

The magazine has three flashes that include buzz words such as special preview and below are the names of bands and artists that will be wrote about inside. It follows the colour scheme of yellow and white. The colour scheme is white, red and neon yellow. The colours red and yellow are loud and energetic which indicates that the music will also be loud inside.

The magazine also has a flash on the right hand side of the magazine of a plus and underneath are plugs and more stories that will feature in the magazine. It follows the colour scheme of white and yellow. The magazine includes a buzz word above the masthead which says Exclusive first interview this implies that the only reliable interview with that band will feature in this magazine.

The main image shows the four band members of the band Panic! At the disco. They are all stood with serious expressions on their faces. It is a mid-shot so the reader can see that theyre wearing either white or dark purple t-shirts. It has also been taken from a low-angle which gives the band members power. This targets the demographic because they want to see the bands they like exhibiting the rebellious and dark nature of rock which they enjoy. The magazine has three graphic features of Paramores main singer, Metallicas main singer and of the Killswitch Engage band. This indicates the inside stories will be interviews with these bands which will reveal information about their tours, gigs and albums. Above the graphic features is a flash which contains the words free Live Poster Special! this will encourage the target audience to buy the magazine because it will include a free poster. Includes the buzz word plus! which gives the impression of their being lots of information.

The magazines masthead is Kerrang! This is the sound a guitar will make when being played. The letters are black and have a crack going through them which resembles the idea of music being so loud that it cracks a window. The colour of the writing is black which gives a gothic and dark impression to the magazine. This will attract the targeted demographic of males aged between 25-45 who like rock music as they will like that the masthead imitates the sound of a rock guitar being played. The cover title reads Panic! At the disco across the middle of the page in large white writing. It is supposed to suggest that the main story is about the band in the main image. The colour of the writing is white with a thick black outline so it stands out against the background. The word panic implies there will be chaos which is associated with the rock genre. This will attract the demographic because the target audience like the subject of rebellion and chaos so they will be intrigued to read more.

The colour scheme is red, black and white. The colour red connotes danger, passion and blood and the colour black connotes a dark and gothic impression to the magazine. The central image is of an artist signing autographs. He has long black hair and has tattoos across his chest, neck and down his arms this adds to the rock image of rebellious.

This tells the reader from just looking at the headings what the content will be inside. The headings are yellow and have a block of black background which makes them stand out. Also the colours yellow and black could represent police yellow tape which connotes danger and chaos.

There is a flash that says inside 30 Seconds To Mars poster special this is a famous band and the free giveaway of poster which will encourage the reader to buy the magazine.

There are two other graphic features that relate to the text which tells you what content is on what page. There is an advert for people to subscribe to the magazine.

The masthead is Contents which tells the reader exactly what the page is about. The writing is coloured yellow and is against a black background. This could represent the same colours of police tape which connotes images of rebellion and chaos. There is a tagline in the top left hand corner of the page where the editor tells the readers his highlights of making this issue. His signature is at the end to show that it is personal. The graphic feature next to is the front cover of this issues magazine. The central image is a close up of an artist. His head is slightly tilted down so we can see his tattoo which presents him as quite rebellious. The anchorage text above tells the reader which page to find the interview with him. There is a pull quote and a callout underneath the masthead which says Angels and Airwaves? Never heard of them. But Blink 42s not a bad band. The quote is controversial as the person who said it has named another band but has appeared to say that he doesnt care about them which will generate an audience as they will want to know if there could be any conflict between the bands. Down the right hand side are headings and page numbers. The headings are: feedback, news, live reviews, features, K! Icons, album reviews, gigs, swag and famous last words. These headings are the same as the other contents page which indicates that Kerrang! Use the same style of contents page with each type of edition. The colour of the headings are yellow with a black background which gives the impression of police tape which warns people about danger and chaos.

There are 5 other graphic features. Which all have rock and roll poses which suggests the content in the magazine will be wild and interesting to the reader. Below each image is anchorage text which gives the title of the pages and tells you what page to find the articles on. The colour scheme is yellow, black and white. The colours connote chaos, danger and wildness. This stereotypically matches the image of rock.

The heading at the top of the page is The allAmerican rejects the word rejects implies the band is an outcast or has been rejected due to controver sial behaviour which will intrigue the reader.

The masthead is Dirty little secrets in red and pink writing. The colours red and pink suggest passion, love, lust and danger. The body text is an interview with the band. The writing in pink are the questions that the band were asked and the writing in red is the names of the band members who replied to the questions. Their answers are written in white which allows the writing to stand out against the dark purple background.

The phrase dont be fooled implies that band is more rebellious than people think and that the interview will contain some information about the band that will surprise them. Also the colours red and pink suggests danger, passion and lust. The phrase The all-American rejects is repeated 3 times which it trying to add to the bands image of being rebellious and wild.

Also what appears to be the lead band member is wearing the same colours of the article which are red, pink and purple. All the colours represent passion, lust, danger and mystery. The faces of the band members are each individual which suggests the diversity of their personalities in the band. The 4 other graphic features are in black-and-white and they are of the band members during the interview. The images show the band members smoking, laughing and posing for the camera which indicate that they are the stereotypical rebellious rock band.

There is a pull quote on the right hand side and it says I was tripping balls! the phrase is informal and it indicates that there is a story in the interview that tells an crazy or rebellious story. The quote is in a pink box and is in black writing which stands out against the background.

The central image is of the three band members on a bed lying down. This is supposed to link in with the heading the the teenagers which stereotypically are known to spend a large amount of time in their bedroom. The masthead is in the top left hand corner which is radar and that is the masthead of the whole magazine. There is a blue box at the bottom of the main image that says need to know which indicates the magazine has information about the band/ the band activities that fans will want to know about.

The heading is The Teenagers in black writing against a blue background. The word teenagers suggests this band is young and rebellious as during peoples teenage years they are expected to push boundaries. The body text is about the band and has one other graphic feature in it which shows one of the band members performing. Also highlighted in blue is a callout and pull quote which will draw attention to what the band has said.

Down the right hand side are reviews of three other bands. The title is everyones talking about in white letters so it stands out against the background. There are three other graphic features which show images of the other bands. Also the names of the bands are in a large font so that they stand out against the other text.
