Stonewall: Riots Heard Around The World

By TIANA TATE
In 1969, a series of riots over police action against The Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York Citys Greenwich Village, changed the longtime landscape of the homosexual in society overnight. Since then the event itself has become a legend. With little accurate information available on the riots themselves David Carter wrote Stonewall: The Riots that Started the Gay Revolution. His writing was based on hundreds of interviews, searches of public and previously sealed files, and over a decade of research into the history and the topic, Stonewall brings the singular event to vivid life in the definitive story of one of historys most singular events. Brief interview with David Carter What inspired or motivated you to write about the Stonewall inn riots? I suppose the deepest motivation was that Stonewall has tremendous symbolic power, a power so great that it is on the same level as that of the great myths. Even though author , Martin Duberman already wrote a book about the Stonewall riots why did you as well? I had just found my lifes calling, that of writing, and I was looking around for a book to write and say, Why didnt I think of that? But I was glad that at least the story was finally being told. Then when his [Martin Duberman] book came out, while it was a very interesting book, I felt disappointed that the riots were so very briefly recounted. I then found out both that there were many people that he could have interviewed but did not and that many Author: David Carter people in the community disputed various aspects of his account, and some very hotly: there was no consensus that his version of events was accurate. Thus it seemed to me that the opportunity still existed for me to write a history of the event.? Was your goal to accurately research the Stonewall riots events? I always told everyone: I am not out to prove or disprove any hypothesis nor to make any individual or group demons or heroes: I simply want to find out the truth and let the chips fall where they may. And I always stuck to that approach. How would you feel about the idea of Stonewall being taught in schools? Oh, I have been saying this for years. The history of the LGBT civil rights movement is not taken seriously as civil rights history nor as American history, and of course it is both. But again, the Stonewall Rebellion needs to be taught in context: it is meaningless if it leaves out the gay liberation movement that came out of Stonewall. Last question, How do you feel about the progression of gay rights from 1969 to now? On the one hand, it is has been breathtaking with marriage being legal in some states long before I would have thought that achievable. On the other hand, we dont yet have a single federal law protecting us from discrimination, much to Congresss everlasting shame. Incidentally, I think that when Congress finally passes one piece of federal civil rights protection for us our history will begin to be taken seriously by the mainstream.

A Gay Revolution

The supreme court has struck down DOMA saying that it was unconstitutional. That gay and lesbian couples deserve equal rights, like any other married couple. They would protest against any gay pride parades that were happening in any given city. There mission is to make sure that traditional marriage is enforced and nothing less. A Time To Remember
By DASHAUN LEMELLE
The anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America vs Dale case is an important day for the freedom of homosexual individuals all around the country. From the first day to the last, the goal was clear, keeping the freedom of homosexuals in every way possible. From the rights of Gay marriage to the rights of just being able to be in public, this is the story of the right to be a homosexual leader of nonhomosexual minorities. Dale was a boy scout of great potential, being an example to even other scouts of similar rank. After becoming the rank of eagle scout, he started becoming involved in protests, meets and eventually became a gay rights activist. He originally he sent a letter asking to be an assistant troupe master for one of the boy scout divisions but, after a newspaper was released, mentioning his homosexuality, the Boy Scout Staff turned him down for being

gay. He took this to court under violation of the New Jersey anti discrimination law and the violation of the boy scout first amendment, freedom of self expression. From there, several conflicts took place within the supreme court based on the rules and regulations of the boy scouts amendments and leadership, one of them involving the troupe masters role on instilling leadership within the boys. The problem faced by both sides is the thought of a gay activist leading a division of boy scouts, instilling homosexuallity instead of survival and leadership. This was mentioned multiple times, constantly pointing out the thought of Dale teaching the boys how to be honosexual. Due to another amendment of the boy scouts, To stay morally clean the debate became even more conflicted, focusing on the question, Did Dale try and teach the boy scouts how to be homosexual?. The debate went on for days, only to end when the judge announced Dale can not instill his beliefs into the boys if he were to be an assistant troupe master. Dale won his case after the jury took the anti discrimination law into consideration, making him able to be an assistant troupe master even though he is a gay rights activist. However, he must not instill his homosexuality into any of the children and leave it to specialized adults who have taught children the reproduction of the human body.
