Societatea Paleontologilor din Romnia Paleontologia la un nou nceput n cadrul Uniunii Europene Ultimul mandat al perioadei clujene de conducere a Societii Paleontologilor din Romnia s-a ncheiat la data de 16. 09. 2005, cnd la adunarea de bilan a Societii i la nchiderea lucrrilor celui de-al cincilea Simpozion Naional de Paleontologie de la Bucureti, s-a ales o nou conducere naional i un nou preedinte, n persoana subsemnatului. Sigur, conducerea i mai ales viabilitatea unei societi tiinifice i nonprofit ca cea a noastr este o ncercare dificil, n condiiile aride a societii noastre civile. Greutile, mai ales de ordin administrativ s-au dovedit a fi prezente de la nceput, n sensul c transferul legal al sediului i nscrierea Societii la Judectoria Iai, nu s-au putut face pn n prezent, datorit unor vicii de form i de procedur. Datorit acestor discordane, unele activiti ale Societii au ntrziat, dar sperm s revenim la ritmul normal. n ultimul Buletin al Societii (Buletinul nr. 14) datat martie 2006, precedentul preedinte, profesorul Ioan Bucur, analiza n intervenia sa La sfrit de mandat viaa paleontologic din Romnia i cumva direciile de evoluie din viitor. i dau perfect dreptate! Prin acest nou nceput care este de fapt o nou continuitate, ncercm s pstrm echilibrul i acea tensiune n activitatea paleontologic romneasc. n timpul scurs de la alegeri pn acum, activitatea paleontologic n ar a continuat, cu toate privaiunile, n special financiare, dar i din punct de vedere al personalului angajat n cercetarea paleontologic. n acest sens au continuat cercetrile, mai ales n domeniile deja mpmntenite ale paleontologiei, specifice centrelor clasice universitare.

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 Palaeontology at its new beginning in the European Union The last mandate of the Cluj leading team for the Palaeontologists Organization from Romania ended on the 16th of September 2005, when, at the summing-up assembly of the Organization and the closing session of the Fifth National Symposium of Palaeontology from Bucharest, there was elected a new national leading committee and a new president, namely the undersigned. Of course, leading and especially making viable a non-profit scientific organization as ours, is a difficult task, under the arid conditions of our civil society. The hardships, especially the administrative ones, have proved to be present even from the start, so that the legal transfer of the premises and the subscription of the Organization at the Iai Court House could not be done, even until today, due to some informalities and procedure faults. Due to these unconformabilites, some activities of the Organization were late, but we hope to come back to the normal rhythm. In the last Bulletin of the Organization (Bulletin no. 14), dated March 2006, the former president, Professor Ioan Bucur, in his presentation At the end of the mandate, made an analysis of the palaeontological life in Romania and presented briefly the evolution directions for the future. I totally agree! For this new beginning, which is actually a continuity, we have tried to keep the balance and that so-called tension in the Romanian palaeontological activity. At the time that has passed since the elections until the present day, the palaeontological activity in the country has continued, in spite of all the straitened circumstances, especially financial, but also from the point of view of the staff hired in the

Societatea Paleontologilor din Romnia S-au desfurat stagii de perfecionare i colaborri n strintate, au fost participri la manifestrile tiinifice de profil din ar i strintate cu prezentarea de comunicri interesante, s-au susinut teze de doctorat cu subiecte i de paleontologie, au aprut lucrri tiinifice valoroase sau monografii ce vor rmne ca repere tiinifice importante. Frecvena lor putea fi i mai mare, iar angajarea n activitatea tiinific de performan, mai profund. Programele tiinifice i finanarea lor sunt ns precare. n general cercetrii tiinifice n Romnia nu i se aloc atenia i subvenia necesar din partea celor ce astzi ne conduc. Paleontologia n general, n lume, are o finanare deficitar, dar organizarea cercetrii n unele ri, ridic la cote nalte cercetrile paleontologice. Cercetarea paleontologic i rezultatele ei nu au o repercusiune imediat n progresul i dezvoltarea societii. Termenul cercetare proiectare dezvoltare, folosit uneori fr o judecat profund n defuncta societate comunist se perpetueaz aproape automat i acum. El era folosit n special de cei ce nu fceau cercetare i avea un substrat pur politic. O cercetare fundamental, de lung durat i solid, a stat n toate domeniile la baza unei dezvoltri profunde a societii, cu rezultate uneori excepionale. n alte ri, ca spre exemplu Frana, cercetarea tiinific este coordonat i finanat prin intermediul CNRS, care i are filiale de valoarea unor institute de cercetri la toate universitile din ar. Academia, la rndul ei, i are propriile institute de cercetri. La noi n ar, Institutul Geologic al Romniei este pe cale de faliment, alte institute de cercetri de profil sunt pe cale de dispariia.

In this respect, the research has continued, especially in the fields already naturalized of palaeontology, specific to the traditional university centres. There have been organized specialization trainings and collaborations with specialists from abroad, there have been participations in scientific sessions in the field, from our country and abroad, with presentations of interesting papers, there have been presented Ph.D. papers in Palaeontology, there have been printed valuable scientific papers and monographs which will remain important scientific marks. Their frequency could have been greater and the involvement in scientific activity deeper. But the scientific projects and their finances are precarious. Generally, in Romania, the scientific research is not paid particular attention and not offered the necessary funds. Palaeontology, in general, in the world, benefits from precarious financing, but the organization of research in some countries brings the palaeontological research to high standards. The palaeontological research and its results do not have an immediate impact on the progress and development of the society. The research-design-development term, used sometimes in a very superficial way in the deceased communist society has automatically been perpetuated until now. It was used especially by the persons who were not involved in research but had a mere political background. A fundamental research, solid and longterm, has always been the basis of a profound development of the society, sometimes with exceptional results. In other countries, such as France, the scientific research is coordinated and financed by CNRS, which has subsidiaries with the value of research

Societatea Paleontologilor din Romnia CNCSIS, care coordoneaz activitatea de cercetare, ar trebui s nu reprezinte numai o organizaie central, ci s aib uniti de cercetare cu specific pe lng universiti, s aib programe de cercetare de lung durat, cu finanare substanial, cu echipe de specialiti care s rezolve probleme tiinifice majore i de anvergur. Propuneri de teme din partea beneficiarilor, cadre didactice sau cercettori, disparate i nu cuprinse ntr-un program unitar naional, care au anse sau nu s fie acceptate i finanate, rezolvate mai mult sau mai puin dup o cercetare real, nu vor duce niciodat la un progres consistent i util al tiinei n general i al paleontologiei n special. Fostul preedinte al societii noastre n intervenia sa Paleontologia n secolul XXI, din Buletinul Societii nr. 14, avea perfect dreptate. Societile de Paleontologie trebuie s-i continue activitile tiinifice tradiionale, s joace un rol important n popularizarea paleontologiei, s joace un rol important n educaie. S ia o poziie agresiv n privina eliminrii locurilor de munc n domeniul paleontologiei din industrie, mediul academic i muzee etc. Dei am intrat n Uniunea European trebuie s treac nc suficient timp pn cnd societatea civil i mai ales conducerea statului va nelege necesitatea sprijinirii, n primul rnd financiare i apoi morale, a cercetrii tiinifice fundamentale i aici m refer la cea paleontologic de pe urma creia ar avea un beneficiu pe termen lung. Nici programele de nvmnt nu sunt adecvate. Nici cercetarea biologic la universiti sau n afara acestora nu ine cont de cercetarea paleontologic i implicit de rezultatele acesteia n nelegerea i interpretarea lumii vii actuale. Ce este de fcut? n primul rnd s ne continum activitatea cu forele pe care le avem, s ne sprijinim la nivel

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 centres in all the universities in the country. The Academy, on its turn, has its own research centres. In our country, the Geological Institute of Romania is nearly bankrupt, other research centres in the same field are on the way to extinction. CNCSIS, which coordinates the research activity, should represent not only a central organization, but should also have research subsidiaries in the university centres, should have long-term research programmes, with substancial finances, with teams of specialists to solve the major scientific problems. The theme proposals coming from the beneficiaries, teachers or researchers, heterogenous, not included in a unitary national programme, which have or do not have chances to be accepted and financed, solved after a more or less real research, will not lead to a consistent and useful progress of science in general, and of Palaeontology in particular. The former president of our organization was absolutely right in his presentation Palaeontology in the XXIst century, from the Organization Bulletin no. 14. The Palaeontology organizations should continue their traditional scientifical activities, should play an important role in education. Should take an aggressive position as regards the reduction of jobs in industry, in the academic environment and museums. Although we have joined the European Union there is still necessary to pass quite a long period of time until the civil society understands the necessity to support, first of all financially and then morally, the fundamental scientific research, I mean the palaeontological research which might bring a long-time benefit. The education programmes are not adequate either. The biological research in or outside universities does not take into account either the palaeontological research and implicitly

Este greu de anticipat c pn la o reform real a cercetrii tiinifice n Romnia i o apreciere pe msura activitii tiinifice n universiti, cercetarea tiinific n general i cea paleontologic n special s capete alte valene. Noi ne propunem, n msura posibilitilor, s pregtim viitorul Simpozion Naional din 21 23 septembrie 2007 de la Iai (care va fi un bilan al cercetrii paleontologice din ar n ultimii doi ani) s ncercm o orientare a cercetrii paleontologilor n echipe de lucru, pe teme comune, s susinem prin publicaii rezultatele cercetrii i s atragem ct mai muli tineri pasionai ctre cercetarea paleontologic. n punerea n practic a acestor ctorva idei, trebuie s avem contribuia i acceptul tuturor membrilor Societii, sprijinul nostru comun, fr interese personale i cu dorina ca Paleontologia romneasc s dea dovad c este egala aceleia din ri mai dezvoltate din Europa i din afara granielor UE. Suntem siguri c potenialul nostru tiinific nc nu a fost utilizat la capacitile maxime, c sunt nc multe resurse nevalorificate, c sunt nc muli tineri care vin din urm i nc nu a fost recepionat cuvntul lor. Vrem s credem c noul vnt european va aduce un nou imbold, o nou exprimare i n domeniul att de frumos i inedit ca cel al Paleontologiei. Prof dr. Leonard Olaru

its results for the understanding and interpreting the present day living world. What is to be done? First, we should continue our activity with the strengths that we have, to support each other on national level, to take care of and encourage the young people who are passionate about research, to encourage research on teams working on national matters, to make ourselves known in the international scientific environment and through publishing and having results which could open the eyes of those who have control over scientific national research. It is hard to anticipate that until a real reform of the scientific research in Romania and a real appreciation for the scientific research in universities is present, scientific research in general and palaeontological in particular will acquire other importance. We propose, as the possibilities allow us, to organize the National Symposium on the 21st-23rd September 2007 in Iasi (which will be a summing-up of palaeontological research in our country for the last two years), to try to divide the palaeontologists research on work teams, common themes, to support them by publishing the results of the research and by attracting more young people passionate about palaeontological research. In order to put into practice some of these ideas, we need the contribution and the approval of the members of the organization, our common support, without any personal interests and the wish that the Romanian Palaeontology prove it is equal to that from more developed countries in Europe and outside the EU borders. We are sure that our scientific potential has not been used to maximum capacities, that there are many young people coming from behind and whose message has not been heard yet. We would like to believe that the new European wind will bring a new impulse, a new expression for the so beautiful and unique field of palaeontology.

Societatea Paleontologilor din Romnia Muzeul Naional de Geologie n noua structur a IGR, Muzeul Naional de Geologie funcioneaz n cadrul seciei Instalaii Naionale, i se afl n coordonarea direct a dr. Antoneta Seghedi, care este eful seciei. n cadrul muzeului, pe lng activitatea de cercetare, inclusiv a materialului din patrimoniul Muzeului, se desfoar o intens activitate educaional concretizat n realizarea unor proiecte cu specific geologic i paleontologic (Pmntul pe nelesul celor mici, Era dinozaurilor, Ateliere de creaie - pictur, bijuterii cu specific geologic) cu deosebit impact n rndul copiilor, ca i programe de conferine tiinifice pentru aduli, n ideea atragerii ateniei publicului privind importana geologiei n cultura tiinific a omului modern. Activitatea tiinific a cercettorilor paleontologi ai IGR din Muzeul Geologic n ultimii 2 ani, s-a concretizat n 12 lucrri de paleontologie publicate n diverse reviste de specialitate din ar i din lume de cercettorii Dan Grigore, Stnil Iamandei, Eugenia Iamandei, Paul Constantin, Gheorghe Popescu, Valentin Paraschiv. De asemenea, n afar de participarea cu lucrri la Sesiunea de comunicari Centenarul IGR, din 1922 iunie 2006, cercettorii paleontologi din Muzeul Geologic au participat la urmtoarele manifestri tiinifice naionale sau internaionale, cu comunicri tiinifice la: Simpozionul SPR Bucureti 2005, Simpozionul NECLIME Sofia 2005, Conferina European de Paleobotanic i Palinologie Praga 2006, Sesiuni de comunicri la Grdina Botanica Bucureti, 2005, 2006; la Muzeul judeean din Craiova, 2006. La Praga, la propunerea noastr, International Organization of Paleobotany (IOP) a decis ca a 9-a Conferin Europeana de Paleobotanic i Palinologie (EPPC),

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 The National Museum of Geology In the new structure of IGR, the National Museum of Geology functions as part of the Department of National Installations and is under the direct coordination of Ph.D. Antoneta Seghedi, who is the head of the department. Apart from the research activity, including the material from the museum patrimony, the museum hosts an intense educational activity, materialized in projects related to Geology and Palaeontology (The Earth as the small ones can understand it, The Dinosaurs Era , Creative workshops paintings, jewelry of Geology) with a special impact on the children, as well as scientific conferences for adults, in order to attract the attention of the public on the importance of Geology on the scientific culture of the modern man. The scientific activity of the palaeontologists from IGR the Museum of Geology, for the last two years has materialized in 12 palaeontology papers published in several reviews from our country and abroad by the researchers Dan Grigore, Sandu Iamandei, Eugenia Iamandei, Paul Constantin, Gheorghe Popescu, Valentin Paraschiv. Also, apart from the participation with papers in the Presentation Session "The IGR Centenary", on 19th22nd of June, 2006, the palaeontologists from the Museum of Geology took part in the following national or international scientific sessions, with presentations: SPR Symposium Bucharest 2005, NECLIME Symposium Sofia 2005, The European Conference on Palaeobotany and Palynology - Prague 2006, Presentation Sessions at the Botanical Gardens Bucharest, 2005, 2006, at the County Museum in Craiova, 2006.

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 In Prague, at our proposal, the International Organization of Palaeobotany (IOP) decided that the 9th European Conference on Palaeobotany and Palynology (EPPC), in 2014, will take place in Bucharest, organized by IGR, at the Museum of Geology. For this purpose, as there are approximately 7 years until the event, we make an appeal to the scientific community of Romanian palaeontologists to support in any way the training of some specialists in the field of Palaeobotany and Palaeopalynology, so that, in 2014 we present at EPPC Bucharest, a representative group of Palaeobotany specialists. There is still time for student, masters degree and Ph.Dd research in this generous scientific field. Stnil Iamandei Ph. D.

Societatea Paleontologilor din Romnia Prioriti ichnologice romneti n Romnia, prima meniune asupra prezenei unui ichnofosil aparine geologului italian CAPELLINI (1868), care semnaleaz macigne con fucoidi e Paleodictyon di Moineti, n Eocenul din Muntenia (N Vlenii de Munte). Dup 1900, PROTESCU (1912) atrage atenia asupra analogiei dintre unele hieroglife ale fliului cretacic din valea Prahovei i galeriile produse de Gryllotalpa vulgaris (Insecta, Ord. (1927) Orthoptera). MRAZEC semnaleaz, nc din anul 1911, urmele de trre ale unor gasteropode mici (Pirenella mamelata) de pe mlul fin al lagunei Ienisah, situat pe coasta egiptean a Mrii Roii, care amintesc de anume hieroglife din gresiile cretacice ale Carpailor Meridionali. Este evident c, cei doi geologi romni pot fi considerai pe drept cuvnt precursori ai Actuo-paleontologiei, disciplin creat n anul 1928 de geologul german Rudolf Richter. FILIPESCU (1930), recunoate reliefurile n form de fagure de miere, cunoscute sub numele de Paleodictyon, remarcnd ulterior (Filipescu, 1934) c aceast form este prea regulat pentru a fi produsul hazardului i emite ipoteza conform creia Paleodictyon reprezint un sistem de galerii ale unei specii de vermidian cu un sim direcional foarte pronunat, aplicat la sparea galeriilor prin care trebuia s mearg i s se ascund. Din pcate, aceast remarcabil ipotez nu a fost inserat n versiunea francez a tezei de doctorat (Filipescu, 1936) i nici nu a fost comentat de Ilie (1937) care respinge originea animal a lui Paleodictyon, pe care l consider generat de oule de batracieni. Fr s cunoasc ipoteza lui Filipescu, mult mai trziu Webby (1969) implic n explicarea reelei de Paleodictyon

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 Ichnological Romanian priorities The first mention of the presence of an ichnofossil in Romania belongs to the Italian geologist CAPELLINI (1868), who mentioned macigne con fucoidi e Paleodictyon di Moinesti, in the Eocene from Vallachia (N Vlenii de Munte). After 1900, PROTESCU (1912) pointed out the analogy between some hieroglyphs of the Cretaceous flysch from the Prahova Valley and the burrows made by Gryllotalpa vulgaris (Insecta, Ord. Orthoptera). MRAZEC (1927) noted, already in 1911, the repichnia of some small gastropoda (Pirenella mamelata) from the fine mud of the Ienisah lagoon, situated on the Egyptean coast of the Red Sea, similar to some hieroglyphs from the Cretaceous sandstones of the South Carpathians. It is obviously that, the two above-mentioned geologists could be considered the precursors of the Actual-palaeontology, domain created in 1928 by the German geologist Rudolf Richter. FILIPESCU (1930), recognized the relief with a honeycomb shaped, known as Paleodictyon, remarking latter (Filipescu, 1934) that this shape is too regular to be a hazard produce and advanced the hypothesis that Paleodictyon represents a system of burrows made by a vermidian species, with a pronounced directional sense, applied at digging of the burrows, through it walked and hidden. Unfortunately, this remarkable hypothesis was not insert in the French version of the PhD thesis (Filipescu, 1936) and also was not commented by Ilie (1937), who rejected the animal origin of Paleodictyon, considered generated by the eggs of the batraciens. Much more latter, Webby (1969), without knowing the hypothesis of Filipescu, explained the net of Paleodictyon by the participation of a vermidian organism, which acted in

GROZESCU (1918) i POPESCUVOITETI (1927) sunt primii geologi romni care semnaleaz prezena urmelor de pai de vertebrate. Astfel, primul figureaz urme de pai de psri n depozitele burdigaliene ale Pnzei Subcarpatice din Moldova (Tazlul Mare) i, implicit, din Neogenul Europei, iar de de al doilea o urm de artriodactil (?Dicrocerus) din Neogenul zonei cutelor diapire a Munteniei (Ocnia). Ulterior, PAUC (1942, 1952) descrie urme de pai de psri (Larus, Sterna) n molasa burdigalian din Vrancea unde, mai trziu, PANIN (1961) identific urme de pai de psri pe care le atribuie genurilor actuale Charadrius i ?Motacilla. Din Gresia de Almau (Burdigalian) de la N de Piatra Neam, Panin (1964) descrie dou ichnogenuri noi de psri (Charadriipeda minor, Gruipeda intermedia) i un ichnogen nou de carnivor (Felipeda felis). Din Vrancea, o regiune extrem de bogat n urme de pai de psri i de mamifere, PANIN & AVRAM (1962) descriu o urm de proboscidian (Proboscipeda enigmatica), dou de carnivore (Felipeda lynxi, Canipeda longigriffa) i nou de psri (Ardeipeda egretta, A. gigantea, A. incerta, Gruipeda maxima, Charadriipeda recurvirostrioidea, Ch. minima, Ch. disjuncta, Ch. becassi, Anatipeda anas). Panin & Avram (1962) propun prima clasificare general a urmelor de pai de psri,

Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 conformity with the prescribe answers. Related to this ichnogenus, the contribution of ILIE (1931) should be mentioned. The author described and figured several ichnospecies, proceeding from Atanasiu & Murgeanu, Protescu and Filipescu collections, and also discussed all the hypotheses related to the anorganic and organic origin of the ichnogenus, extremely intersting. GROZESCU (1918) and POPESCUVOITETI (1927) are the first Romanian geologists, who identified the presence of vertebrate footprints. The former described bird footprints from the Burdigalian deposits of the Subcarpathian Nappe from Moldavia (Tazlaul Mare region)and, implicit, from the Neogene of the Europe, while the latter an artriodactyl footprint (?Dicrocerus) from the Neogene of the Dyapiric Zone of Vallachia (Ocnita region). Latter, PAUC (1942, 1952) described bird footprints (Larus, Sterna), in the Burdigalian Molasse from Vrancea region. From this area, PANIN (1961) identified bird footprints, assigned to the actual genera Charadrius and ?Motacilla. To mention that Panin (1964), described two new bird ichnogenera (Charadriipeda minor, Gruipeda intermedia) from the Burdigalian Almasu Sandstone (N of the Piatra Neamt) and a new carnivore ichnogenus (Felipeda felis). In the Vrancea area, a region extremely rich in footprints of birds and mammals, PANIN & AVRAM (1962) described a proboscidian footprint (Proboscipeda enigmatica), two of carnivores (Felipeda lynxi, Canipeda longigriffa) and nine of birds (Ardeipeda egretta, A. gigantea, A. incerta, Gruipeda maxima, Charadriipeda recurvirostrioidea, Ch. minima, Ch. disjuncta, Ch. becassi, Anatipeda anas). Buletin nr. 15, mai 2007 In Memoriam Liviu Ionesi, Member of Romanian Academy Our great geologist, Ion Simionescu said: Mans eternity is forged by the results of his work, and knitting the thoughts and deeds of our ancestors is the warp on which the progress of one people is woven, and from it of the whole mankind. The words of our great scholar reflect perfectly the life and activity of the academician Liviu Ionesi. On the 16th of December 2006, after a long physical and psychic suffering, his life ended, at almost 82 years old. He was born in Bucovina, on the 27th of January, in Frtuii Vechi village, Suceava county, in the family of the primary school teachers Clina and Vasile Ionesi, he started primary school in the native village. He attended Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi" Highscool in Rdui, he graduated in 1944, during the war. Then he read the courses of the Faculty of Science, specialization in Natural Sciences at Al.I. Cuza University from Iai, he graduated in 1949. He is accepted as tutor, in January 1950 at the Department of Geology- Palaeontology of Al.I. Cuza University, Iai, where he will teach all his life. He goes through all the stages of the university titles, up to the highest one of University Professor (1972). In 1991, he asks to retire and becomes a consulting professor, in the same year he is accepted as corresponding member of the Romanian Academy. In 2003, he becomes a full member of the Romanian Academy, thus being acknowledged as one of the top personalities of the Romanian science. The emblem of professor Liviu Ionesis daily activity was work and tenacity, perseverence and passion in palaeontological, biostratigraphical, palaeoecological and palaeogeographical research on the Flysch formations in Eastern

Cuvintele marelui nostru crturar se reflect perfect i n viaa i activitatea academicianului Liviu Ionesi. La 16 decembrie 2006, dup o lung suferin fizic i psihic s-a stins din via, la aproape 82 de ani, academicianul profesor dr. Liviu Ionesi. Nscut pe plaiuri bucovinene, la 27 ianuarie 2005 , n comuna Frtuii Vechi, judeul Suceava, n familia nvtorilor Clina i Vasile Ionesi, i ncepe clasele primare n comuna natal. Studiile liceale le face la Liceul Eudoxiu Hurmuzachi din Rdui, pe care le termin n 1944, n plin rzboi. Urmeaz apoi Facultatea de tiine Naturale a Universitii Al. I. Cuza din Iai, pe care o absolv n 1949. Este ncadrat apoi ca preparator, n ianuarie 1950 la Catedra de GeologiePaleontologie a Universitii Al. I. Cuza Iai, n cadrul creia va activa toat viaa. Parcurge ulterior toate treptele universitare, pn la cea de profesor universitar (1972). n 1991, solicit pensionarea i devine profesor consultant, an n care este ales i membru corespondent al Academiei Romne. n anul 2003, devine membru titular al Academiei Romne i cu

Emblema activitii zilnice a profesorului Liviu Ionesi a fost munca i tenacitatea, perseverena i pasiunea n cercetarea paleontologic, biostratigrafic, paleoecologic i paleogeografic a formaiunilor paleogene de fli din Carpaii Orientali i a trmurilor teriare de platform. n formaiunile de fli, mare parte din cercetrile sale s-au canalizat asupra vii Moldovei cu studii de paleontologie i paleoecologie, biostratigrafie i paleogeografie, sedimentologie i tectonic. Fundamentul tuturor acestor studii l-au constituit studiile de litologie i cartare geologic. A elaborat multe lucrri i sinteze, rapoarte geologice i alte studii publicate n reviste de specialitate romneti i strine. Cea mai reprezentativ lucrare este monografia Fliul paleogen din bazinul vii Moldovei, ce a primit premiul Grigore Coblcescu al Academiei Romne n anul 1971 i a constituit teza de doctorat susinut n 1969, sub conducerea academicianului Nicolae Macarovici. i-a nceput activitatea de cercetare n fli, n 1950, sub conducerea academicianului Ion Bncil, lucrnd n cadrul unei echipe a Institutului Geologic al Romniei. Cercetrile profesorului Liviu Ionesi au adus o important contribuie la o mai bun cunoatere a pnzelor de Audia, Tarcu i Vrancea, din fliul Carpailor Orientali. Dup 1968, s-a ocupat i de formaiunile sarmaiene din Platforma Moldoveneasc, Dobrogea de Sud i Molasa Pericarpatic. n acest nou domeniu de cercetare a avut drept colaboratoare pe doamna profesor Bica Ionesi, care i-a stat alturi peste cinci decenii. Contribuiile aduse n studiul depozitelor neogene de platform i de molas sunt numeroase. Amintim doar cteva:

In the Flysch formations, most part of his research was concentrated on Moldova Valley, with studies of Palaeontology and Palaeoecology, Biostratigraphy and Palaeogeography, Sedimentology and Tectonics. The basis of all his research were the studies in lithology and geological section. He elaborated many papers and summaries, geological reports and other studies which were published in reviews of the field, Romanian or international. The most representative work is the monograph Palaeogen Flysch in the basin of Moldova valley, which received the Grigore Coblcescu prize given by the Romanian Academy in 1971 and which was also his Ph.D. thesis presented in 1969, tutored by the Academician Nicolae Macarovici. He started his research activity on Flysch, in 1950, led by the Academician Ion Bncil, as part of a team of the Romanian Geological Institute. The research of professor Liviu Ionesi had an important contribution on a better knowledge on the layers from Audia, Tarcu and Vrancea, in the flysch of the Eastern Carpathians. After 1968, he also studied the Sarmatian formations from Moldavian Platform, Southern Dobrogea and Pericarpathian Molasse. In this new research field he collaborated with professor Bica Ionesi, who stood by him for more than five decades. The contributions he had in the study of the neogen platform deposits and molasse are numerous.We mention only a few: - Contributions in the study of the expansion of Buglovian in VicaniDorneti-Costia area, from Moldavian Platform. - Highlight on the upper Volhynian from Negureni-Vleni area, Southern Dobrogea.

Evidenierea Volhinianului superior din zona Negureni-Vleni, dobrogea de Sud. - Datarea depozitelor sarmaiene din zona de molas la est de Culmea Berzun. - Elaborarea unei noi scheme litobiostratigrafice asupra Badenianului, Buglovianului i Volhinianului din Platforma Moldoveneasc. - Atribuirea la Chersonian a nisipurilor de Vleni din zona Vleni Mrgneni Hoiseti, din Platforma Moldoveneasc. - Stabilirea variaiei litologice a Calcarului de Repedea pe dreapta i Stnga Prutului. - Realizarea unei sinteze asupra limitei Basarabian/Chersonian n Golful Moldo-Galiian pe dreapta i stnga Prutului. ntre numeroasele sale publicaii, mai recent este monografia de mare valoare tiinific intitulat Sarmaianul mediu i superior de pe Platforma Moldoveneasc, publicat n Editura Academiei Romne n 2005. La aceast monografie, profesorul Ionesi, n afara colaboratorilor romni a avut i colaboratori din Republica Moldova. Profesorul Liviu Ionesi a fost un critic sever i cinstit n munca de cercetare cu sine i cu toi ceilali care l-au cunoscut i cu care a colaborat. A fost un model de om de tiin, tenace i perseverent, foarte bine documentat, care nu a admis niciodat impostura i promovarea pe ci necinstite. A cultivat ntotdeauna respectul i tiina naintailor i ne-a sprijinit pe toi s ne ridicm la nivelul lor i s-i depim. A fost un susintor aprig i un aprtor permanent al Seciei de Geologie de la Universitatea Al. I. Cuza din Iai, cea mai veche din ar, mai ales n momentele dificile ale existenei sale.

Elaborating a new litobiostratigraphical scheme over Badenian, Buglovian and Volhynian in Moldavian Platform. - Including in the Chersonian the Vleni Sands from Vleni-MrgineniHoiseti area, in Moldavian Platform. - Establishing the lithological variation of Repedea Limestone, on the right and left side of Prut river. - Making a summary on the Basarabian/Chersonian limit in the Moldo-Galitian bay, on the right and left side of Prut river. Among his numerous publications, the latest one is a monograph of great scientific value entitled Middle and Upper Sarmatian on Moldavian Platform, published by the Romanian Academy in 2005. For this paper, apart from the Romanian collaborators, professor Ionesi also had collaborators from the Republic of Moldavia. Professor Liviu Ionesi was a severe and fair critic for the research work, for himself and for all the other people he knew and collaborated with. He was a role-model as a science man, tenacious and perseverent, very well documented, has never accepted fraud and promotion on unfair grounds. He always encouraged respect and esteem for the predecessors and supported us all to get to their level and go beyond. He was a fierce supporter of the Geology Department of Al. I. Cuza University in Iai, the oldest in the country, especially in the most difficult moments of its existence. We could say that he died with the pencil in his hand and paper on his desk, as his did not live to see his last paper entitled Sculptors in the stone of time about the geologists from Iasi and other Romanian geologists, published by Al. I. Cuza University Publishing House, Iai (2007). It is a

I. Cuza din Iai (2007) n-a mai apucat s-o vad. Este o lucrare de sintez biografic, cu o valoare documentar i de istorie tiinific deosebit. Noi cei care l-am cunoscut, cruia i-am fost studeni, colegi i colaboratori, trim momentul de adnc mhnire sufleteasc, cci dispariia profesorului Liviu Ionesi, mentorul multora dintre noi, a lsat un gol imens n geologia ieean i romneasc. Nu ne rmne dect s-i pstrm memoria nentinat i s ne strduim s ajungem la nivelul realizrilor tiinifice pe care l-a avut academicianul profesor Liviu Ionesi. Prof. dr. Leonard Olaru
