Career Exploration (5 marks) There are lots of career options and where do you start???

The first step is thinking about your strengths and interests. The next step is to think about is how much training you are willing to invest into obtaining your career. Just because you love Psychology in school doesnt mean you are willing to invest the 10-12 years (and money) it takes to become a Psychologist. Now is the time to research and find a program option that works for you and your strengths.

Task #1 Your strengths and Interests #1 List your top 6 strengths from your Strengths Comic: Artistic, Curiosity, Optimistic, Integrity, Kindness and Athleticism. #2 List your 6-8 Hobbies and Interests from your ePortfolio: Soccer, Art, Music, Volleyball, Beauty & Fashion, Reading, Leadership, Friends, the Ocean, and Surfing. #3 What is your favorite subject/subjects in school and WHY?: I enjoy all of the sciences, Physics, Biology, and Chemistry, because they are the subjects that I really enjoy, and I like the fact that these courses show you the different paths you can take for postsecondary, for example, Biology, for Med school or Physics for Engineering. Task #2 -Find a Focus Area that interests you. Review the focus areas book. The focus areas are useful as they give you a starting point to think about the direction you want your career to go (what are your key interests?). Take a look at one or two focus areas that interest you. Answer the following questions in complete sentences. 1. Select 1 or 2 focus areas. In 2-3 sentences, describe why this area/areas are of interest to you. Health and Human Sciences- This area interests me because I like to have the ability to help others, and possibly save a life. Having Science as an interest for me in school, I think that this area will keep me intrigued throughout the years of schooling to come, learning about the human body, and how it can heal. Science and Applied Sciences- This area is also an interest for me because this area includes more of the Physics side of the sciences, which I also thoroughly enjoy. Math has always been a strong suite for me, and this focus area allows you to further your abilities in different ways, like for Architecture or Engineering.

2. Take look at the Course Selection Form you filled out list the electives you plan on taking that might help you with your focus area. Are there any other courses you should take, that you currently dont have listed? Dont forget to visit your career centre or counselor if you have any questions! The courses I have chosen include Physics 11 & 12, Chemistry 11 & 12, and Biology 12. These courses are all Sciences, so they will all help towards my post-secondary education. One course that could help me if I do decide to go into Engineering or Architecture, is Drafting, which could give me an idea on what some of it will be like for myself.

Task #3 - How much post-secondary education is right for YOU? There are many options to obtaining your career workplace training, apprenticeship, college, university, and the military are a few of your options. Before you begin selecting a career and diving into your research you have to really think about how much further education you are interested in. Review the following options to see what best suits you. In 2-3 sentences, describe what one (or two options) is the best fit for you think about time commitment, costs, and your academic ability. You dont need to research individual programs, just think about if you are more interested in trades, certificate programs, diploma, or university To start my post-secondary plan, I am planning to go for my Bachelor of Science, an undergraduate possibly in Biochemistry or Biology, which will take about 4 years. This option is good for me because it will give me many options once I have completed it, whether I want to specialize in something, possibly in Medical school.

FOUNDATION TRADE CERTIFICATES These programs introduce you to a variety of trades training opportunities. Grads often receive some technical training credit towards their desired trade. APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAMS Apprenticeship combines paid on-the-job training, work experience and post-secondary classroom instruction. Click here to see Okanagan College Apprenticeship program offerings. **Also, SD23s Dual Credit programs in your Grade 12 year. CERTIFICATE Normally involves up to one year of full-time study. Academic certificates are typically made up of 30 credits or about 10 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Click here to see Okanagan College Certificate program offerings. DIPLOMA Normally involves two years of full-time study. Academic diplomas are usually made up of 60 credits or about 20 courses. These programs are typically taken at a college. Okanagan College offers many diploma programs such as Business Administration Diploma or Commercial Aviation Diploma. BCIT offers many diploma programs at their Burnaby campus. BACHELORS DEGREE (Undergraduate degree) Normally requires four years of academic course work. You can apply right to the University or start at a college and transfer in your first year or two. It is common to gain specialization in one subject area through a Major. MASTERS DEGREE Normally involves two years of full-time studies beyond an undergraduate degree. The degree offers you the opportunity to enhance knowledge and skills through a combination of course work and independent research under a faculty advisor. The research is presented in the form of a thesis.

Task #4 - COBSS Central Okanagan Bursary & Scholarship One application allows students to apply to hundreds of awards. Bursary primarily based in financial need. Scholarship based on excellence in a variety of areas (academic, fine arts, applied skills, sports, community involvement, etc.)
