I submit myself to the lotus feet of my guru. With HIS
blessings I read the Manidweepa stotram which occurs in
the Devi hgavata Mahpurnam in the !"

adhyya of

s#anda. In my humble effort to share my happiness
with all of you devi bha#tas$ I have prepared this boo#.
%he e&planations offered prior to the stotra and after the
stotra were purely retrieved from websites. I wish to
e&tend my than#s to all those who have done such a great
'ob in translating the verses into (nglish )which is the
most commonly understood global language these days*. My
only contribution to this effort is to organi+e and present
the information already available on websites. I wish to
place a re,uest to all of you reading this stotra to #indly
provide any further useful information related to Devi to my

An Introduction to the stotram


%his introduction is an e&tract of the meanings of verses
occurring in the !0

adhy2yas of the !"

s#anda of
the Devi h2gavata Mah2pur2nam.

What is #nown in the Srutis$ in the Sub2la 3panisad$ as the
Sarvalo#a over the rahmalo#a$ that is Manidvpa. Here
the Dev4 resides. %his region is superior to all the other
regions. Hence it is named 5Sarvalo#a.6 %he Dev4 built this
place of yore according to Her will. In the very beginning$
the Dev4 M7la 8ra#riti hagavat4 built this place for Her
residence$ superior to 9ail2sa$ :ai#untha and -olo#a. :erily
no other place in this universe can stand before it. Hence it
is called Manidv4pa or Sarvalo#a as superior to all the
.o#as.
%his Manidv4pa is situated at the top of all the regions$ and
resembles an umbrella. Its shadow falls on the rahm2nda
and destroys the pains and sufferings of this world.
Surrounding this Manidv4pa is an ocean called the Sudh2
Samudra$ which is many yo'anas wide and many yo'anas
deep. Many waves arise in it due to winds. :arious fishes and
conches and other a,uatic animals play around and here
the beach is full of clear sand li#e gems. %he sea;shores are
#ept always cool by the splashes of the waves of water
stri#ing the beach. :arious ships dec#ed with various nice
flags are plying to and fro. :arious trees bearing gems are
adorning the beach. <cross this ocean$ there is an iron
enclosure$ very long and seven yo'anas wide$ very high so as
to bloc# the Heavens. Within this enclosure wall the military
guards s#illed in war and furnished with various weapons
are running gladly to and fro. %here are four gateways or
entrances= at every gate there are hundreds of guards and
various hosts of the devotees of the Dev4. Whenever any
Deva comes to pay a visit to the >agad4svar4$ their :2hanas
)carriers* and retinue are stopped here.
%his place is being resounded with the chimings of the bells
of hundreds of chariots of the Devas and the neighings of
their horses and the sounds of their hoofs. Here are seen
thousands of houses adorned with trees of gems and 'ewels
and tan#s filled with plenty of tasteful good sweet waters.
<fter this there is a second enclosure wall$ very big and built
of white copper metal )an amalgam of +inc or tin and
copper*= it is so very high that it almost touches the
Heavens. It is hundred times more brilliant than the
preceding enclosure wall= there are many principal
entrance gates and various trees here. <ll the trees that are
found in this universe are found there and they bear always
flowers$ fruits and new leaves? <ll the ,uarters are scented
with their sweet fragrance?

Sripuram
<fter the annihilation of handasura$ %rimurtis called upon
the cosmic architect and a Sripura is located wherein the
Devi resides on mount Meru in H(/ full resplendent
splendor. %he mount Meru has @ pea#s Ane on the eastern
side$ one on north; west$ one on the south;west and in the
center of these is the fourth pea# more taller and more
wider than the other three. Sripuram is on the middle
pea#.

Sripuram has got seven metallic compound walls that are
s,uare shaped. (ach wall is separated from the ne&t one by
a distance of seven yo'anas )yo'ana is a measurement of
length of about nine miles*.. %hey are 9alayasa )iron* wall$
9ansya )bron+e* wall$ %amra )copper* wall$ Seesa
)lead* wall$ <ar#uta )brass* wall$ 8anchaloha )five
metal* wall$ /aupya )silver* wall and Hema )gold* wall.

Inside the golden compound$ there are eleven pra#aras
)compounds* one within the other and inside them there are
si& more compounds. <ll these compounds are perfect
s,uares and the distance between one compound and the
other is Seven yo'anas. )yo'ana is a measurement of length
of about nine miles*.
8ushyaraga 8ra#ara )%he compound of %opa+*
%he area between the golden compound and this one is
called 8ushyaraga area. Here reside the male and
female Siddhas. %hose who were born earlier in the
race of Siddha and who obtained attainment )Siddhi*
in their spiritual practices worshipping the Divine
Mother$ stay here as Siddhas and gladly continue to
worship Her.

8admaraga 8ra#ara )%he compound of /uby*
Here celestials of the species called Baranas reside.
%hose who were born in Barana world and worshipped
the Mother are reborn here$ after attaining Her grace.

-omedhi#a 8ra#ara )%he compound of <gate*
In this arena$ 9ala San#arshani devi resides. She is
worshipped by the Coginis and hairavas.

:a'ra 8ra#ara )%he compound of diamonds*
<psaras and -andharvas )divine dancers and singers*
stay in this arena. %hey are ever engaged in the >apa
)repetition* of the Divine Mothers names and stay here
happily. %he river :a'ranadi flows in this place. %he
-oddess :a'reswari stays here. When the demon
handa swallowed the diamond weapon ):a'ra
<yudha* of Indra$ he could get bac# his weapon by
worshipping the Mother here.

:aidurya 8ra#ara )%he compound of Bats eye*
%hose of the netherworld$ who attained spiritual
achievements by worshipping the Mother$ stay in
this arena. %he emperor ali also resides here.

Indraneela 8ra#ara )%he compound of Sapphire*
%hose people who were born on the earth stay in this
area en'oying pleasures$ after their worship of .alitha
during their lifetime there. Soon after the effect of their
punya )merit* is e&hausted$ they will be born again as
human beings on the earth. y the effect of their
previous pious deeds$ they again worship the Mother
and return once more to this pious place. Due to the
blue colour of these precious stones$ the dar# effect of
li#es and disli#es persists in them. Hence they are born
again and again. %hose who can control their senses
to merge in the ultimate state of salvation$ i.e.$ in the
Divine Mother$ they do not have rebirth.

Mu#ta 8ra#ara )%he compound of pearls*
Several rivers named %amraparni$ Mahaparni$
Sadamu#ta$ Sadoda#a etc. flow in this area. %he
celestials who worshipped the Mother and chanted her
Mantras stay here. %he cities of the rulers of the eight
directions e&ist here. )%he eight directions are (ast$
West$ Dorth$ South$ Dorth;(ast$ South;(ast$ Dorth;West
and South;West*.


Mara#ata 8ra#ara )%he compound of (merald*
%he abode of the -oddess Dandanatha also called
:arahi e&ists in this area. %here is a garden of golden
palm;trees here. %he -oddess 3nmattabhairavi$
Svapnesvari$ %iras#arinidevi$ 9irapadadevi reside in
this area. When -oddess Dandanatha is on duty$ she
stays in a separate palace in the forest of Mahapadma
)ig lotuses*.

:idruma 8ra#ara )%he compound of Boral*
In this area$ rahma along with sages li#e Marica stays
and worships the Divine Mother.

Mani#ya 8ra#ara )%he compound of -em*
%his area is also called the hall of gems i.e. Mani#ya
Mantapa. Here :ishnu worships the Mother.

Davaratna 8ra#ara )%he compound of nine precious stones*
In this area e&ists a huge hall with thousands of pillars.
Here Siva along with his attendants constantly
supervises the activities being done as per the orders of
.alitha Devi.

Manomaya 8ra#ara )%he compound of mind*
%he entire area is a big well of <mruta )nectar*. %he
-oddess %ara resides here. <long with her attendants$
she rows a big boat and ta#es her devotees inside along
with Her.

uddhi 8ra#ara )%he compound of the intellect*
%he entire area is a big well of liss. %he captain of the
ship in this arena is the -oddess :aruni. She is also
called as Sudha malini and <mruteswari.
<han#ara 8ra#ara )%he compound of (goism*
%he entire area is a big well of criticism and nectar.
%he water of this well is the nectar running in the nerve
Sushumna )%he central nerve between Ida and 8ingala
nerves of ones bac#bone*. %he captain of the ship in
this area is the -oddess 9uru#ulla.
Suryabimba 8ra#ara )%he compound of the Sun*
Here brilliance comparable to the light of the rising
Sun e&ists always. 8lenty of flowers called 9uruvinda
are abundant here. %he Sun performed penance here
and obtained brilliance. Martanda hairava stays here.
He has a very luminous form. His three wives are
Mahapra#asa Sa#ti$ Ba#shusmati Sa#ti and Bhayada
Sa#ti )%he powers of great brilliance$ eyesight and
shade*.
Bandrabimba 8ra#asa )%he compound of the Moon*
Moonshine ever e&ists here. %he Moon performed
penance here and attained illumination. Somanatha$
the .ord of the stars is the chief deity of this area.
Srungara 8ra#ara )%he compound of eroticism*
%his area is full of waters of eroticism. Here Manmatha$
)Bupid;the god of love* does 'apa of the Mothers sacred
names$ rowing in a boat. Anly those who are of pure
mind by nature can cross this area.

Devis abode Cintamani Gruha )%he abode of -ems*
%his is the great palace of Sri;cha#ra. It is called
Mahapadmatavi also. <round the mansion$
hundreds of thousands of lotus li#e palaces e&ist. %o
the east of this place$ there is a large vessel with a
diameter of one Co'ana. %his is called <rghya 8atra
)the vessel used to wash hands*. <t the south;east
corner e&ists Bidagni#unda )the fire pit of
#nowledge*. <t the south;west e&ists Srica#ra
/atha$ the vehicle of Srica#ra. <t the north;west
e&ists the -eya Ba#ra /atha of the -oddess
Mantrini. <t the north;east e&ists the 9iri Ba#ra
/atha of the -oddess Dandini. In between the (ast
and the south;east e&ists Mantrini gruha E the
abode of the -oddess Mantrini. In between the (ast
and the north;east e&ists Dandini gruha E the abode
of the -oddess Dandini.

We now proceed to the manidweepa varnanam stotram as
e&plained by Sage :yasa$ in the Devi hagavata 8urana.

Chapter XII On the description of Mani Dvpa

:erse !;!F.
:y2sa saidH; A 9ing >aname'aya? %he /atnagriha$ above
mentioned$ is the Bentral$ the Bhief and the Browning 8lace
of M7la 8ra#riti. %he nine 'ewels are H;)!* Mu#t2$ )"*
M2ni#ya$ )G* :aid7rya$ )@* -omeda$ )I* :a'ra$ )J* :idruma$
)F* 8admar2ga$ )K* Mara#ata$ and )L* D4la. %his is situated
in the centre of all the enclosures. Within this there are the
four Mandapas$ i.e.$ halls built of one thousand )i.e.$
innumerable* pillars. %hese are the Sring2ra Mandapa$
Mu#ti Mandapa$ >M2na Mandapa and (#2nta Mandapa= on
the top there are canopies of various colours= within are
many scented articles scented by the Dh7pas$ etc. %he
brilliance of each of these is li#e that of one 9oti Suns. An all
sides of these four Mandapas there are nice groups of
gardens of 9asm4ra$ Malli#2$ and 9unda flowers. :arious
scents$ and scented articles$ for e&ample$ of mus#$ etc.$ are
fully arranged in due order. %here is a very big lotus tan#
here= the steps leading to it are built of 'ewels. Its water is
nectar and on it are innumerable full;blown lotuses and the
bees are humming always over them. Many birds$ swans$
92randavas$ etc.$ are swimming to and fro. %he sweet scents
of lotuses are playing all around. In fact$ the whole
Manidv4pa is perfumed with various scented things. Within
the Sring2ra Mandapa$ the Dev4 hagavat4 is situated in the
centre on an Nsana )seat* and She hears the songs sung in
tune by the other Dev4s along with the other Devas.
Similarly sitting on the Mu#ti Mandapa$ She frees the >4vas
from the bondages of the world. Sitting on the >M2na
Mandapa$ She gives instructions on >M2na$ and sitting on the
fourth (#2nta Mandapa$ She consults with Her ministers$
the Sa#h4s$ <nanga 9usuma$ etc.$ on the creation$
preservation$ etc.$ of the universe. A 9ing? Dow I shall
describe about the main$ 9h2s$ room of Sr4 Dev4. .isten. %he
9h2s Mah2l palace of the Dev4 hagavat4 is named Sr4
Bhint2mani -riha. Within this is placed the raised platform$
the dais and sofa whereon the Dev4 ta#eth Her honourable
seat. %he ten Sa#ti;tattvas form the staircases. %he four legs
are )!* rahm2$ )"* :isnu$ )G* /udra$ and )@* Mahesvara.
Sad2siva forms the upper covering plan#. Aver this Sr4
huvanesvara Mah2 Deva or the Supreme <rchitect of the
3niverse is reigning. Dow hear something about this
huvanesvara. efore creation while intending to sport$ the
Dev4 hagavat4 divided Her ody into two parts and from
the right part created huvanesvara. He has five faces and
each face has three eyes. He has four hands and He is
holding in each hand spear$ signs indicating do not fear$ a&e$
and signs granting boons. He loo#s si&teen years old. %he
lustre of His ody is more beautiful than 9oti 9andarpas
and more fiery than thousand Suns= and at the same time
cool li#e 9oti suns. His color is crystal white$ and on His
left lap Sr4 huvanesvar4 Dev4 is always sitting.

:erse !K;"L.
An the hip of Sr4 huvanesvar4$ is shining the girdle with
small tin#ling bells$ built of various 'ewels= the ornaments
on the arms are made of burnished gold studded with
:aid7ryamanis= the %2tan#a ornaments on Her ears are
very beautiful li#e Sr4cha#ra and they enhance very much
the beauty of Her lotus face. %he beauty of Her forehead vies
with$ or defies the Moon of the eighth bright lunar day. Her
lips challenge the fully ripened imba fruits. Her face is
shining with the %ila#a mar# made of mus# and saffron. %he
divine crown on Her head is beautified with the Sun and
Moon made of 'ewels= the nose ornaments are li#e the star
:enus and built of transparent gems$ loo#ing e&ceedingly
beautiful and shedding charming luster all around. %he nec#
is decorated with nec#laces built of gems and 'ewels. Her
breasts are nicely decorated with camphor and saffron. Her
nec# is shining li#e a conchshell decorated with artistic
designs. Her teeth loo# li#e fully ripe pomegranate fruits. An
Her head is shining the 'ewel crown. Her lotus face is
beautified with ala#2 as if these are mad bees. Her navel is
beautiful li#e the whirls in the river h2girath4= Her fingers
are decorated with 'ewel rings= She has three eyes li#e lotus
leaves= the luster of Her body is bright li#e 8admar2gamani
cut and carved and sharpened on stone. %he bracelets are
adorned with 'ewel tin#ling bells= Her nec# ornaments and
medals are studded with gems and 'ewels. Her hands are
resplendent with the lustre of the 'ewels on the fingers= the
braid of hair on Her head is wreathed with a garland of
Malli#2 flowers= Her bodice )short 'ac#et* is studded with
various 'ewels.

:erse G0;@I.
A 9ing? Sr4 Dev4 is slightly bent down with the weight of Her
very high hard breasts. She has four hands and She is
holding noose$ goad and signs granting boons and 5do not
fear.6 %he all beautiful all merciful Dev4 is full of love
gestures and beauties. Her voice is sweeter than that of lute=
the lustre of Her body is li#e 9otis and 9otis of Suns and
Moons if they rise simultaneously on the s#y. %he Sa#h4s$
attendants$ the Devas and the Dev4s surround Her on all
sides. Ichch2 Sa#ti$ >M2na Sa#ti$ and 9riya Sa#ti all are
present always before the Dev4. .a''2$ %usti$ 8usti$ 94rti$
92nti$ 9sam2$ Day2$ uddhi$ Medh2$ Smriti$ and .a#sm4 are
always seen here incarnate in their due Oorms. %he nine
84tha Sa#tis$ >ay2$ :i'ay2$ <'it2$ <par2'it2$ Dity2$ :il2sin4$
Dogdhr4$ <ghor2$ and Mangal2 reside here always and are
in the service of the Dev4 huvanesvar4. An the side of the
Dev4 are the two oceans of treasures= from these streams of
Davaratna$ gold$ and seven Dh2tus )elements* go out and
assume the forms of rivers and fall into the ocean Sudh2
Sindhu. ecause such a Dev4 huvanesvar4$ resplendent
with all powers and prosperities$ sits on the left lap of
huvanesvara$ that He has$ no doubt ac,uired His
omnipotence. A 9ing? Dow I will describe the dimensions of
the Bhint2mani -riha. .isten. It is one thousand Co'anas
wide= its centre is very big= the rooms situated further and
further are twice those preceding them. It lies in <ntar4#sa
)the intervening space* without any support. <t the times of
dissolution and creation it contracts and e&pands li#e a
cloth. %he lustre of this Bhint2mani -riha is comparatively
far more bright and beautiful than that of other enclosure
walls. Sr4 Dev4 hagavat4 dwells always in this place. A
9ing? <ll the great ha#tas of the Dev4 in every rahm2nda$
in the Devalo#a$ in D2galo#a$ in the world of men or in any
other lo#a$ all those that were engaged in the meditation of
the Dev4 in the sacred places of the Dev4 and died there$ they
all come here and reside with the Dev4 in great 'oy and
festivity.

:erse @J;IL.
An all the sides rivers are flowing$ some of ghee$ some of
mil#$ curd$ honey$ nectar$ pomegranate 'uice$ 'ambu 'uice$
and some of mango 'uice$ sugarcane 'uices. %he trees here
yield fruits according to ones desires and the wells and
tan#s yield water also as people desire. Dever is there any
want felt here of anything. Dever are seen here diseases$
sorrow$ old age$ decrepitude$ an&iety$ anger$ 'ealousy$ and
envy and other lower ideas. <ll the inhabitants of this place
are full of youth and loo# li#e one thousand Suns. <ll en'oy
with their wives and they worship Sr4 huvanesvar4. Some
have attained S2lo#ya$ some S2m4pya$ some S2r7pya and
some have attained S2rsti and pass their days in highest
comfort. %he Devas that are in every rahm2nda all live
here and worship Sr4 Dev4. %he seven 9oti Mah2 Mantras
and Mah2 :idy2s here assume forms and worship the Mah2
M2y2 Sr4 hagavat4$ Who is of the nature of rahm2. A
9ing? %hus I have described to you all about this Manidv4pa.
%he lustre of Sun$ Moon and 9otis and 9otis of lightnings
cannot be one 9otieth of one 9oti part of Its lustre. <t some
places the lustre is li#e :idrumamani= some places as are
illumined li#e the lustre of Mara#ata Mani= some$ li#e S7rya
92nta mani and some places are rendered brilliant li#e
9otis and 9otis of lightnings. %he light at some places is li#e
Sind7ra= at some places li#e Indran4lamani= at some places$
li#e M2ni#ya$ and at some places li#e diamond. Some places
are bla+ing li#e the conflagration of fire= and some places
loo# li#e molten gold= some places seem filled with the lustre
of Bhandra#2ntamani$ and some places loo# brilliant li#e
S7rya#2ntamani.

%he mountains here are all built of gems and 'ewels= the
entrance gates and enclosures are built of gems and 'ewels=
the trees and their leaves all are of gems= in fact all that
e&ist here are all of gems and 'ewels. <t some places
numbers of peacoc#s are dancing= at some places cuc#oos
are captivating the minds of persons by cooing in the fifth
tune and at others doves and pigeons and parrots are
ma#ing sweet cac#ling sounds. .a#hs and la#hs of tan#s are
there with their pure crystal;li#e waters. %he /ed lotuses
have blown fully and enhanced the beauty of the place. %he
captivating scents of these lotuses e&tend to a distance one
hundred Co'anas all round and gladden the minds of people.
%he leaves are rustling with gentle bree+e. %he whole s#y
overhead is radiant with the lustre of Bhint2mani gems and
'ewels. <ll the sides are illuminated with the brilliancy of the
