Walker 1 Corbett Walker Lynn Raymond ENGL 1103 11/04/13 Annotated Bibliography Brogan, Ray. "Socioeconomic Status." Education.com.

Education, 23 Dec. 2009. Web. 31 Oct. 2013. (Brogan, Ray) This source gives me not only information that I was looking for, but also gives me some that I hadnt thought about using. The purpose of this source is to show how social economic status can have an affect on children, especially with growing up and how they deal with education. The strength of this source is that the information that I have found in this source agrees with the rest of the information that I have found through other sources and that it has plenty of evidence back up its material. I will most definitely use this source, because of the information it provides. It goes along exactly with what our project topic and it also agrees with the observation that we made in our proposal. Lastly, this source provides plenty of info that will help us to delve into the report. A quote from this source, One of the big problems in school for children of low SES is the selffulfilling prophecy of failure.

"Education & Socioeconomic Status." Apa.org. American Psychological Association, n.d. Web. 31 Oct. 2013. (Education)

Walker 2 The purpose of this source is to educate the public of the issues of a low SES. It not only explains what this is, but also explains what its effects can be in a places like school environment to places like a health environment. This is a very strong and reliable source because it is from a reliable organization. I will be using this source because of how accurate it is and because the information it provides is so dependable. One such example is, Children from low-SES environments acquire language skills more slowly, exhibit delayed letter recognition and phonological awareness, and are at risk for reading difficulties (Aikens & Barbarin, 2008).

Rouse, Cecilia Elena, and Lisa Barrow. "How Family Background Affects Educational Attainment." Opportunity in America 16.2 (2006): n. pag. Futureofchildren.org. The Future of Children. Web. 31 Oct. 2013. (Rouse, Cecilia Elena) This source talks a lot about how family circumstances affect a childs education. It gives statistics and uses experiments to show how different aspects of families economic status affect a childs life. An example of this is, If it is also true that ability is genetically determined, then less able parents whose socioeconomic status is low will also have less able children who will get less schooling than the children of more able parents whose socioeconomic status is high. This is definitely a source that I will be using, because I can already see how this source is for my research. I think that the information that this source provides is very relevant and reliable which is also a plus.

Walker 3 "2011- 12 Martin Luther King Jr Middle." ncschoolreportcard.org. Public Schools of North Carolina, n.d. Web. (Martin Luther) The purpose of this source is to show the educational statistics for Martin Luther King Jr Middle School. It provides plenty of different charts and graphs showing things from teacher turnover rate to the percentage of students that are at or above their grade level. I will be using this source because it allows me to compare and contrast the quality of the school compared to others. This such school is one that has a relatively low SES and inturn is not a high quality school. This will be a perfect source then to compare with another school that is one of high quality and has a higher SES.

"2011-12 Marvin Ridge Middle." ncschoolreportcard.org. Public Schools of North Carolina, n.d. Web. (Marvin Ridge) The purpose of this source is to give statistics and percentages of relativity that allow people to see the quality of the school. This school being Marvin Ridge Middle. This source does so by giving data and comparisons with things like school performance and teacher quality. I will be using this source because it allows me to compare and contrast with another source that I am going to use that is of a school that is of lower quality. I will then be able to show and further prove the affects of having a higher SES compared to a lower one.

Barry, Jennifer. "The Effect of Socio-Economic Status On Academic Achievement." Soar.wichita.edu. Wichita State University, Dec. 2006. Web.

Walker 4 (Barry, Jennifer)

The purpose of this source is to present what affects SES can have on a students achievement. It also talks about how a student in a minority can have deficient achievement levels. An example of this is, Numerous studies have found non-White, Minority students to be at a disadvantage and to reach lower academic achievement than Whites. I will be using this source because it gives me yet another example of what can effect a students achievement level in school, both good and bad. It also provides some material that I had not thought about using. Lastly, with this source, I can show how statics in academic achievement, in terms of races, differ.

"How Parents Motivate Their Children Academically: Does SES Matter?" Sitemaker.umich.edu. University of Michigan, n.d. Web. (How Parents Motivate) The purpose of this source is to do three things. The first is to explain what SES actually is and how it is determined. The second is to mention the effects SES whether it is a high one or low one. And finally, the third thing this source does is, shows how SES is related to motivation. This is a source that I am not quite sure if I am going to use or not. Whether I use it or not depends on whether or not I get this same information from another source. There is a possibility that I will use this to show how different people can have differing views and ideas of what effects SES can have. I might also use this source because I like what it says about the link between motivation and SES. This then could be something else that I could talk about in my report.

Southworth, Stephanie. The Effects of Institutional Characteristics of Schools on North Carolina Elementary and Middle School Student Achievement. , 2008. Print. (Southworth, Stephanie) The purpose of this source is to share different aspects of what a students background can do to his or her education, along with how the school itself can have positive and negative effects on students. It does so by showing things such as: data, statistics, and research. I will be using this source, as I have already spent some time reading through it and have found many different piece of useful information. This source will not only provide plenty of factual evidence that I will need for my research, but will also provide visuals too. Another thing is that the research is based on North Carolina schools which is yet another perfect example of how this will be a useful source.

Charlotte/Mecklenburg Survey. Raleigh: The Division, 1978. Print. (Charlotte/Mecklenburg) The purpose of this source is to show data and percentages from topics such as varying class room sizes within different elementary schools to topics such as the number births in a certain year in Mecklenburg County. I will also add that the information is from 1978-79, which may not be the most relevant for my research. This is a source that I dont see myself using but will hold on to just in case I find a reason. I think that the information is first off too old to be relevant to my research, but I also dont see this information as being relevant to my research. I was expecting something completely different from this book but was mistaken.

Hess, Kim. Re: Email Interview Message to Corbie Walker. 2 Nov. 2013. E-mail. (Hess, Kim) The point of this source is for me to get information directly from a teachers personal standpoint. The teacher that I interviewed recently moved from teaching at a school with a low SES to a school with one that is substantially higher. This in turn allowed me to see how she perceived a students attitude in both schools and how she would describe the affects of teaching at each school. One other thing I was able to ask was how students academically succeed in each school. I will be using this source not only because it is very relevant to my research, but is also from a personal standpoint. I also see this as a useful source because through the email interview, I was able to get answers to questions that were very important to my research. There is nothing better than first hand experience, and that is what this source provides.
