SC Standards: 2-4.6 - Edit for the correct use of written Standard American English -The student will be able to compare and contrast common/proper nouns. -The student will be able to choose the correct noun from the interactive game. -The student will be able to decide what nouns are common and what nouns are proper. -The student will complete the handout by listing numerous common and proper nouns. Objective(s) Assessment

Materials and Resources: -Promethean Board -Pencils -Common and Proper Noun Handouts -Proper Nouns Flipchart -http://www.ixl.com/ela/grade-2/identify-common-and-proper-nouns Boys and girls, we have been learning a lot about nouns. We have learned how to make nouns plural, and have even learned how to make special words plural. Now, we are going to learn even more about common nouns and proper nouns. 1. Review previous lesson by using the Proper Noun Flipchart as a guide. Ask students questions such as, What is a noun? or Can anyone give me an example of a noun? 2. Now that I know you guys know what a noun is, can anyone tell me what the word common means? (Using flipchart) 3. Explain to the class that a common noun is a general person, place, or thing. Discuss the difference between a common and proper noun. (Using Flipchart) 4. Do practice problems. (Using Flipchart)

EDEL 441 2 O.DuRant 5. Pull up the IXL website game. Work some questions as a class. Then, call quiet students who have their hands raised, up to the board. 6. Once they seem to grasp the concept of what a common noun is and what a proper noun is, have them return to their seats and hand out the Common and Proper Noun worksheet. 7. Explain/read the directions to the students and allow them to begin. Lesson Closure -After the students finish their handout, ask them some follow up questions about common nouns and proper nouns. Raise your hand if you can tell me what a common/proper noun is? Is teacher a noun? What would be a proper noun that can mean teacher? -Collect handouts.
