Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements of EDUC 5105: Designing Web Based Learning

Professor Scott McMaster Faculty of Education Cape Breton University Sydney, Nova Scotia October 13, 2013

Assignment 2: Concept Mapping Concept Map

The major theme of this concept map is Atlantic Canada. Our concept map provides more details on the four provinces. Its major focus is the physical environment, culture, economics, and history of the region. A minor focus is placed on the political, interdependence, challenges, opportunities, and visions of the future of Atlantic Canada. A key design principle for learning is to make the organizing conceptual framework explicit (Jacobson and Wilensky, 2006). The concept map incorporates text, images, audio, and video in a meaningful way to illustrate the connections between topics and to provide the opportunity for a more complete understanding.

WebQuest The framework for the web based learning will be a WebQuest in which students will utilize online learning resources to foster a greater understanding and appreciation of the Atlantic Canada region. As a teaching technique, WebQuests have been shown to have positive effects on the level of remembering (Dogru & Seker, 2012). Students will complete a culminating research project that incorporates their knowledge of the physical, cultural, historical, and economical identity of the region. Students will be offered a variety of Internet resources and reference sites to analyze, evaluate, and utilize in the construction of their final project. These sites will include government and corporate websites, as well as social media sites like YouTube. Students will engage in critical thinking activities including discussion and debates. Throughout the WebQuest each student will maintain a blog that will serve as a reflective learning journal. The final presentation options will include creating a podcast, multimedia presentation, or a visual presentation.

Assignment 2: Concept Mapping Learners

We have developed this web based learning activity for a class of diverse Grade 9 learners with a range of abilities and talents. The objectives of this program are from the Prince Edward Island Social Studies for Grade 9 Curriculum (see Appendix). All students have prior experience and previous instruction in the areas of word processing and developing multimedia presentations using MS PowerPoint or alternative software. The WebQuest, however, will teach them even more ways to effectively use technology in their learning. In this sense, the WebQuest will not only teach them about Atlantic Canada, but will also prepare them for their futures. According to Strickland (2005), it is safe to assume that in the near future most jobs will require at least a working knowledge of computers [and] if technology is so important to the future success of our students, it makes sense that it should also be an important part of our instruction (p. 139). In later sessions students will explore the connection between Atlantic Canada, Canada, and the world.

Context This activity is intended to be used in a Grade 9 Social Studies class. This learning activity would be completed by students after the completion of the unit on interdependence. The WebQuest will provide a solid foundation for students in learning the concepts/units that will be covered in the remainder of the school year (i.e. physical environment, people and culture, economics and trade, challenges and opportunities, and visions of the future).
