6.

2: Multiplication & Division of

Rational Expressions
Objectives:
Within the learning period, I will be able to
1. Multiply and divide rational expressions by
factoring and then dividing out common
factors.
2. Convert between units using unit analysis.
Chapter 6: Rational Expressions
Standards:
12.0 Students simplify fractions with polynomials in
the numerator and denominator by factoring
both and reducing them to the lowest terms.

13.0 Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide
rational expressions and functions. Students solve
both computationally and conceptually
challenging problems by using these techniques.

If P, Q, R, and S are polynomials with
Q = 0 and S = 0, then

Multiplying Rational Expressions
Warning:
After multiplying such expressions, our result may not be
in simplified form, so we use the following techniques.

Tips in Multiplying Rational Expressions
1) Factor the numerators and denominators.
2) Multiply the numerators and multiply the denominators.
3) Simplify or write the product in lowest terms by applying
the fundamental principle to all common factors.

Dividing Rational Expressions
Tips in Dividing Rational Expressions

1. Change the division into a multiplication where
you use the reciprocal of the divisor as the
second factor.
2. Proceed with multiplication of rational numbers
procedures (factor, multiply, simplify).

Converting Between Units of Measure

Unit analysis (unit fractions) - method of converting units
of measure by multiplying by 1. (It involves different
measurements in the numerator and denominator).
*Multiply the unit fractions like rational expressions,
cancel common units in the numerators and
denominators.

Economy is an important value that should be learned
and practiced. God has given us time, money, talents,
resources, strength, intellect, and these are lent
treasures. They belong to Him and everyone should
realized that we should use them properly. We need to
learn the principle of conservation for a better future.
