ABSTRACT

This research looks at the translation of Arabic Metaphors into Malay. The translation of
Rihlah Ibn Batuttah was chosen as a sample of this research. This book has been
translated by Syed Nurul Akla Syed Abdullah. This study explores the multiple ways that
have been used by the translator to translate Arabic Metaphors into Malay. The
differences in culture, background and experience make it challenging for the translator
to express it in a way that can be understood by non-Arabic speaking Malays. A lot of the
metaphors failed to be expressed in other languages due to literal translation which can
only be understood by the native speakers. This research seeks to describe and analyze
the metaphors in both languages by finding out the similarities and differences between
them. The main objective of this research is to understand the strategies applied in
translating Arabic Metaphors into Malay. This research also looks at how the translator
has successfully maintained the purity and quality of Arabic metaphors into Malay.
