Unit of Work: Ancient Egypt Domain: Humanities Year Level: 7 Duration: 4-6 x 75 minutes classes.

Lesson 1: Crash Course in Ancient Egypt: Part 1 Note: For both parts one and two it might be a good idea to give students a log sheet so that they can write down (min) two interesting facts that they were able to learn about each of the topics during their rotations. This will give them a platform for their projects later. Time Task Explanation Resources Set-Up Set up Work Stations- Find 5 different spaces throughout your learning space to set up each activity. An image of an Egyptian Woman will be placed on the whiteboard. Students will be provided with two different colored markers. Firstly, they will be asked to write their assumptions on what they believe life would have been like for a woman in Ancient Egypt. (In one colour) Whiteboard Whiteboard markers/ Pens and

Secondly they will find on a desk some paragraphs (attached) explaining what life was like for women during Ancient Egyptian times. They will then consider how this information compares with their earlier assumptions. They will then (in the second colour) sum up the information that they have learnt and add it to the board. This activity can also be done on paper- I have found that students find working with the whiteboard a little more engaging than a pen and paper brain storm. This station will require teacher supervision. (The previous groups answers must be wiped off the whiteboard before the next group comes through. It may be a good idea to take a photo of the answers to then share with the class later on).

Students can use the guide to write their own name in hieroglyphics. Some might even want to have a go at writing a secret message to a friend. If teachers have the time they could write their own secret message and ask students to translate it. Students to develop a KWL (What I know, What I want to know, What I learnt) chart on a blank piece of paper. Title: Cleopatra Students will fill in the K and W column of their chart. The teacher will play the video twice through and students can start filling out the L column. Students will be asked to take some time at home to answer any of their own questions that may not have been answered by the video and write their answers in the L column. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R5Ofv8H6Vig This video is also worth checking out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_UK_m0c3Kw This game is a great way of learning how the Egyptians built the pyramids. http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/interactive/games/pyramid_challenge/index_embed.shtml

Egyptian Pharaohs and the first pharaohs of north and south. As well as the significance of the pharaohs headdress. This is quite a lot of reading and there are questions that can be answered in the textbook. Students will watch the video below. They will then have the chance to try and construct a time line of King Tuts life/ a family tree (something to that effect to try and organise the information) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H7ukJSMlazc If there is any time left over students might like to engage in a competition to discover how many children King Tut had before he died! Teachers should set up this workstation with images of the Egyptian Gods and Blurbs with physical descriptions. Students will then work together to match each of the gods to their description. Teachers can use the link below to create the images and blurbs http://www.ancientegypt.co.uk/gods/explore/main.html The game below is an excellent way to learn about general aspects of Egyptian daily life. It takes a while to load when using wireless so it is a good idea to have the Awful Egyptians part of the game loaded before the beginning of class on the smart board and have a teacher supporting students in playing around. http://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/games/terrible-treasures-game

5 mins Note: You may decide that 10 minutes is not enough time for your class to engage in these activities. In which case you may like to create 4 workstations per lesson. Tutankhamen and Cleopatra are extras that could be encompassed in other tasks.

Lesson 3: Museum Task- Research 1. 2. 3. 4. Teachers to distribute Artifact Assignment Sheet to students Teachers may choose to distribute topics to students or allow students to choose their own topic. Students should use the remainder of this class to do some general research on their topic. Students should at the end of this class present 5 interesting facts about their topics.

Homework: Students will be required to bring a draft/ sketch of the artifact they intend to make with a list of materials they will require to do so. Lesson 4: Museum Task- Artifact 1. Students should begin creating their artifact to put on display at the museum. 2. Students may access the resources available to them during this lesson to begin their artifact. 3. Students who do not have access to resources should use this lesson to complete the information plaque that will accompany their artifact. (Note: teachers may consider giving students some additional time to work on their artifacts and writing piece at home i.e. one week/ over a weekend?) Lesson 5/ Lunchtime: Museum Opening. Student artifacts and plaques should be placed around the learning area and other teachers and students should be invited in to view the exhibit. This is a nice way to celebrate student work. Note: You may consider using more class time (If possible) to allow students to work on their research, writing or artifacts.
