Properties of Addition
There are four mathematical properties which involve addition. The properties are the commutative, associative, additive identity and distributive properties. Commutative property: When two numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the order of the addends. For example 4 + 2 = 2 + 4 Associative Property: When three or more numbers are added, the sum is the same regardless of the grouping of the addends. For example (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4) Additive Identity Property: The sum of any number and zero is the original number. For example 5 + 0 = 5. Distributive property: The sum of two numbers times a third number is equal to the sum of each addend times the third number. For example 4 * (6 + 3) = 4*6 + 4*3
Properties of Addition
The following are the properties of addition for real numbers. Some textbooks list just a few of them, others list them all. They may have slightly different names in your textbook. PROPERTIES OF ADDITION
There is a unique real number 0 such that for every real number a,
Identity Property
a + 0 = a and 0 + a = a Zero is called the identity element of addition. For all real numbers a and b,
Commutative Property
a+b=b+a The order in which you add two numbers does not change the result. For all real numbers a, b, and c,
Associative Property
grouping (or association) of the numbers does not change the result. For all real number a, there is a unique real number a such that
Property of Opposites
a + (a) = 0 and (a) + a = 0 A number and its opposite are called additive inverses of each other because their sum is zero. For all real numbers a and b,
(a + b) = (a) + (b) The opposite of a sum of real numbers is equal to the sum of the opposites.
oes anyone have any great ideas on teaching the properties of addition? ie: Associative property- (6 +5) + 8 = 19 or 6 + (5 + 8) = 19 Identity property= When you add 0 to a number the sum is that number. commutative property= 2 + 8 = 10 or 8 + 2 = 10
Please post if you have a creative way to teach these. Thanks so much!
