Concrete Toboggan

STUDENT CLUB

What is GNCTR?
The Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR) is an annual, national engineering competition hosted by a different Canadian university each winter. GNCTR is a competition where teams design and race a toboggan with a concrete running surface, proper steering and braking systems, and a protective superstructure. This Year the 40th GNCTR will be held in London, Ontario hosted by Western University and will be welcoming over 300 students from across Canada.

DIVISION OF WORK:
CONCRETE MIX DESIGN
The batching and testing of sustainable concrete materials.

SUPERSTRUCTURE
The design and testing of lightweight metals for a strong frame, can withstand a 80km/h rollover. Design must take in to account various safety factors, and undergo rigorous testing.

BREAKING AND STEERING

The design and establishment of a creative, innovative, and unique technology to control our sled.

TEAM SPIRIT
The creation of costume, skit, and chants to promote our chosen theme.

FUNDRAISING
To raise capital, and awareness to propel our team to victory.

WHAT IS INVOLVED?
We are required to design and construct a sled in which all the running surfaces are made of concrete, not exceed a mass of 300 lbs. (excluding riders), must safely carry 5 riders and must have a proper steering and braking system. On race day we, along with over 20 other post-secondary institutions from across the country, hurl our nished constructs and riders down a hill at speeds of over 70 km/h.

ADMINISTRATION/REGISTRATION
The organization, and oversight of deadlines and team members.

WHY SHOULD YOU SPONSOR US?

By contributing to SAITs 2014 GNCTR team, sponsors will gain company exposure in the community and with students, facilitate hands-on learning for students, and enable students to take part in an experience far beyond the standard curriculum.

Apply our skills and knowledge to design and build a winning concrete toboggan Create a team with positive attitude and engineering spirit that will proudly represent SAIT at a national event.

To Our Potential Donors,

I am writing to you on behalf of the SAIT Civil Engineering Technology program. We have organized a team to participate in the 2014 Great Northern Concrete Toboggan Race (GNCTR). Our collective goal is to join teams from across the nation and race a concrete toboggan down a set course. This concrete toboggan is developed and fabricated from initial concept to nal design by the members of our team. This year we are looking to travel with our sled to London, Ontario at the end of January for the four day competition. The annual event provides great opportunity for business to contribute and support engineering students that are actively applying industry relevant skills. These contributes can take many forms, from raw materials for the fabrication of various elements, or nancial donations. Donations will be represented in various degrees on our team website, the sled itself on race day and at the tech display event. Within the package we have shown the monetary breakdown of available donor levels. The sled and its associated display will be viewed by professional judges, fellow students and engineering peers. This event offers an industry based audience and a great opportunity for company exposure within the engineering community. In past years the GNCTR has been highlighted on Daily Planet and The Rick Mercer Report. This year our teams goal is focused on using innovative and sustainable methods to create a winning product, which can be applied in Albertas construction industry. We are approaching the project as an opportunity to showcase our skills and represent SAIT and Alberta at this national event. Event related goals include obtaining the CIRCA award and to build upon past rankings. We would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to consider joining or team as a corporate sponsor. We hope you will read the attached package for further information on the event and sponsorship opportunities. We look forward to hearing from you in the near future, and discuss your interest in the 2014 SAIT CVT Toboggan Team. Sincerely,
