Language Arts Video Taping #2 Every day begins with an Everyday Edit where the students complete a paragraph

by finding the ten mistakes. When that was completed the new lesson plan was going to incorporate the curriculums of social studies and language arts. In beginning this lesson a book, Weslandia, was read aloud in front of the class. This book consisted of a boy who was out of place and during the summer he decided to take his school learned knowledge and create his own civilization. Once we finished Weslandia, the students and I went over the seven criteria that created a civilization: social structure, stable food supply, religion, writing, culture, technology and government. As a class there was a discussion along with notes on the definitions and then on how it related to Weslandia. The students were very creative in ideas and understanding the books correlation to a civilization. Once we developed ideas and discussed them, the students were partnered up and began creating their own civilization using all seven characteristics. When writing out their thoughts they also had to design a symbol that corresponded to that individual idea. Once the students checked with me they would write a one-page paper with their partner about how their civilization developed and include the seven fundamentals. Finally, the students painted a small terracotta pot with their symbols, the pot was broken then given to another group and that group had to then write a one page paper on what they thought that groups civilization was about. In this lesson the different strengths I saw were the inflections in my voice and how I presented all the material. There was clear and precise direction in how each process was going to work and develop. The students were given a step-by-step process where they

were able to give their own thoughts and ideas to include in the lesson. Having input and letting the lesson be partially open to thought process let the students expand their thoughts and ideas. While conveying the information and taking notes I made sure to include most students in discussion and constantly walked around the room to check for understanding. Classroom management was clearly seen by using proximity and communication. The students are comfortable in communication but also are aware of my boundaries and how behave. There was always a good sense of structure that was kept and throughout this experience I have learned how to redirect rude or disrespectful behavior and design an appropriate consequence to cease the actions. I will constantly be growing in classroom management and learning different strategies. Patience is one aspect of teaching that I am also continuously developing and realizing how to react to different situations. Another weakness that I am constantly aware of is time management in the classroom. There never seems to be enough time within each class period or the day. The lessons thus far have included either way too much detail or too much information for the time given. There is always a sense of rushing to fit everything in so possibly narrowing or separating the information may help with managing what can fit in that space in time.
