SS Unit Lesson Plan 1

Essential Questions Standards of Learning (be sure to include integrated standards here too)
What can we learn about people and events from long ago? NCSS: Time, Continuity, & Change History K.1 The student will recognize that history describes events and people of other times and places by a) identifying examples of past events in legends, stories, and historical accounts of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln English K.1 The student will demonstrate growth in the use of oral language. a) Listen to a variety of literary forms, including stories and poems. K.2 The student will expand understanding and use of word meanings. c) Use words to describe/name people, places, and things.

Objectives Materials

Students will be able to identify historical accounts of George Washingtons life. Teacher materials: Anchor chart/Marker A Picture Book of George Washington By: David A. Adler Illustrated by: John and Alexandra Wallner Student materials: Worksheet: Draw three events from George Washingtons life (Adopted from Brain POP, Jr.) Pencil Color pencils/Crayons Introduction- whole group (10 minutes) Students are asked to join the teacher on the carpet Introduce new vocabulary: past, present, history o Past: Has already happened o Present: Is happening now o History: Events that have already happened Teacher asks students what they know about George Washington and records students responses on anchor chart Introduce book: A Picture Book of George Washington o This book is about the life of George Washington. George Washington

Procedures (introduction, instructional strategies, summary/close)

lived long ago in the past. Instructional strategies- whole group (10 minutes) Read the book to the students Invite students to comment, react, or interpret the text Summary- whole group/individual work (10 minutes) Asks students what they learned about George Washington o Make sure to mention: George Washington was often called the Father of our Country. He wore a tri-corner hat. (Show example of tri-corner hat) Students individually complete activity worksheet o Based on what you learned about George Washington, you are going to draw three events from George Washingtons life; when he was a child, during the Revolutionary War, and when he was president.

Formative Assessment

Informal verbal assessment and observation during class discussion (formative)- Ask questions to check for comprehension during group discussion, use feedback loop where necessary

Anchor chart (formative)- Teacher fills in anchor chart identifying the students prior knowledge about George Washington o On the anchor chart, teacher writes students initials next to their response

Activity worksheet (formative)- Students must draw three events from George Washingtons life o Assess effort of response (Outstanding, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement)

Differentiation

Learning tendencies: Auditory- listening, discussing Visual- picture book, anchor chart, drawing

Skill readiness: Necessary vocabulary is explained by the teacher for students who do not have sufficient content specific vocabulary knowledge Challenge Level: Students with more advanced skill readiness may draw and write about the events from George Washingtons life
