SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE CHARACTERS

CHARACTER Jamal Malik

From the slums of Mumbai, Jamal finds a life outside of the slums after antiMuslim gangs killed his mother. He is very truthful, almost to a fault, and persistent in pursuing his childhood friend and love of his life, Latika. Because he is the main character and the good guy , he is better-looking or cute compared to his brother Salim.

Jamals older brother, Salim takes charge very early on, and his experience and the things he has had to go through have seemed to toughen him. Though his rough experience throughout his childhood has seemed to have slightly corrupted him, for example when he shot Maman so ruthlessly, he still shows a love for his brother and Latika towards the end of the movie. Latika is a shy girl who has also lost her parents in the slum attacks, and joins Jamal and Salim on their adventures. She is forced into a life she doesnt want by Maman, and forced to marry a much older man she doesnt love.

Maman is a man who runs a place where he brings orphaned or homeless children. He tests them to sing and when he discovers a particularly talented one, he cruelly makes them sing for money on the streets, and to make it worse he destroys their eyes with acid to draw sympathy from people because they will give more money if the child is blind.

Sergeant Srinivas

Jamal is taken to him when police are suspicious he is cheating on the game show. He performs very harsh methods of torture, and works for the inspector who interrogates Jamal. Prem Kumar is the host of Who Wants to be a Millionaire. He, like many of the other authorities, accuses Jamal of cheating. He has quite a cocky and condescending attitude toward Jamal, most likely because Jamal is a chaiwallah, and even tries to sabotage Jamals game.

Javed Khan is later Salims boss, who forces Latika to marry him. He is abusive, and selfish.
