There are eight planets in the Solar System.

Each planet has specific characteristics that relate only to them. Some planets have moons while other's have rings. They are listed in order closest to the farthest from the sun. In this wiki you will learn several facts about each planet. Mercury is the first planet from the sun. It has no atmosphere so it can't not support life. There is no water on the surface. It is Rocky and has many craters. The surface of Mercury that faces the sun can reach 800 degrees Fahrenheit. On the other hand the temperature at night can reach a low of negative 300 degrees Fahrenheit. It has no moons.

Venus is the second planet from the sun. It is slightly smaller that Earth. VEnus is surrounded by clouds consisting of mercury, ferric chloride hydrocarbons and sulphoric acid. The atmosphere of Venus is made up mainly of carbon dioxide. It has no moons and is the brightest planet.

Earth is the third planet from the sun. It is the only planet of the solar system that supports life. Earth only has one moon and has an ozone layer. The Earth is 4 or 5 billion years old!

Mars is the fourth planet from the sun. Mars is nicknamed the red planet because it is covered with rust-like dust. Even the atmosphere is a pinkish red, colored by tiny particles of dust thrown up from the surface. Mars has a weak gravity that cannot hold atmosphere very well. Mars has two moons. Their names are Deimos and Phobos.

Jupiter is the fifth planet of the sun. Jupiter is a very stormy planet. There are storms found throughout the atmosphere,

and most of the storms seem to never end. Jupiter has over 50 moons and has rings, even though you can't see them. It is considered a gas giant because it does not have a solid surface.

Saturn is the 6th planet from the sun. It is the second largest planet in our solar system. Saturn's rings are 169,800 miles long but are so incredibly thin. Saturn has 53 moons. Saturn is one of the few planets that are not perfectly round.

Uranus is the seventh planet from the sun. Uranus has 27 moons. The rings on Uranus are made up of black dust particles and large rocks. The rings are not nearly as long as Saturn's. Uranus is extremely cold and is also called the "ice giant." Scientists also believe that on the surface of Uranus there may be a huge ocean. And, interestingly, it is thought that the temperature of this ocean may be extremely hot, maybe even as hot as 5000 degrees Fahrenheit.

Neptune is the 8th and final planet from the sun. Neptune has six rings which circle the planet. These rings are believed to be fairly new. Neptune has 13 moons. Neptune is a very windy place. No other planet in the Solar System has winds that are as strong as Neptune's. The winds near the Great Dark Spot were believed to have reached nearly 1,200 miles per hour.
